Hoof and Paw Inc (H&P) is a shelter based, no kill, animal rescue organization operating in the West end of Montrose County.
We average 130 animals annually that come through our organization that are fed, vaccinated, spayed/neutered (S/N), given medical attention, and rehomed. This number does not include the animals that are "just visiting", which include Dogs at Large from within the towns of Nucla and Naturita, animals that need to be cared for while their human is hospitalized, or in jail. We also assist over 250 owned animals through our low-cost, subsidized clinics that are brought into our rural community. We have three shifts daily, 7 days a week, that are completed by volunteers. Over the past 2+ years we have had animals every day of the year. We currently have 45 animals within our care.
Our mission is to care for lost, abandoned, neglected, or surrendered animals. To find their homes/owners and return them, or get them adopted into a new forever home. We are in the process of reviewing our mission statement to include our mission to help owned/community animals and owners as well as the importance of improving the health and humane treatment of all animals.
Hoof and Paw was started in 2009, and gained non-profit status in January 2010. At that time we were a foster based organization providing a couple clinics a year. In 2019 we became shelter based and in 2020 we opened a thrift store. The store revenue allowed us to increase annual clinics from 4 to 12. Since 2019 we have more than doubled the amount of animals we re-home annually going from 50 to almost 130 this year.
