Hero Expeditions was founded on the belief that giving back to those who serve our nation and our local communities is simply the right thing to do. We recognize that these service members often carry the rigors of the job over into their personal lives, which oftentimes profoundly impacts their mental and emotional health and those they love the most. Our outdoor recreation expeditions allow our participants to meet other men and women who serve(d) and engage alongside one another to foster meaningful relationships that boost morale and promote healing for those involved.

"The Hero Expeditions crew sure knows how to put on an event! Not only do they provide the opportunity for a great hunting experience, but they also provide a relaxed atmosphere.

It’s that atmosphere that makes all the difference in the world. When they bring veterans together, it creates a peacefulness for each of us. Though many of the veterans may not know each other, they all have a common ground in the defense of our nation. This creates bonds and friendships that will last a lifetime! Keep up the great work!!"

"After a career spanning 22 years in the Army I really missed the camaraderie we experience while serving, especially on deployment.

I had a great time when I participated with HEX on a waterfowl hunt, but what really has made a difference to me is the opportunity they have given me to come back and volunteer on subsequent outings. It has been therapeutic for me to be able to help give back and the chance to spend a few weekends a year in hunting camp with people from different eras, different branches, and even civilians who share the same passions I’ve got, it really has had a positive impact on my life. I am proud to be a part of Hero Expeditions."

Onesimo “Tre” Garza ~ US Army Veteran, Long-time Hero Expeditions Volunteer

“I just returned from the 7th annual SSG Christopher Birdwell Memorial Honker Down event.

What an experience it was to be able to spend time and hunt with a group of young men who served their country and now are able to enjoy the outdoors. Hero Expeditions is definitely a TOP SHELF organization that brings these men together. Thank you to all the HEX Board members who made it possible for me to attend and experience this great program.”

Joe Preciado ~ Retired US Border Patrol Agent

“Hero Expeditions provided me, and many others, with a lifetime memory and lasting friendships.

Their approach feels comfortable to a combat veteran and allows for a military mindset to experience a hunt and team effort that they can be proud of. It was one of the most special things I have ever done, and I am very thankful for all involved. HEX is a top-notch Organization and treats their applicants extremely well.”

Jacob Blackburn ~ Law Enforcement Officer/US Army Veteran

"Great organization, they are a class act, whether it’s just someone to talk to, or take you on a world-class expedition with some great people.

They do everything they possibly can for veterans! I can promise you will leave a better person with some friends that you wouldn’t have met otherwise! Thanks, HEX, for such a humbling experience!"

“I couldn’t be any more pleased with my experience with Hero Expeditions! These guys are top-notch!

I was fortunate enough to be chosen to take part in the 6th Annual SSG Christopher Birdwell Memorial Honker Down for Wounded Veterans event, and I am truly honored! These guys really believe in what they are doing, and I do too! I have never felt so welcomed and comfortable in such a short amount of time as I did there. The hospitality was amazing! My favorite part of the event is the honesty and sincerity of the individuals involved with this organization. The event was truly about “Us” rather than the glamour shots and the publicity. This impressed me and spoke volumes about what these guys do for the community and as an organization. Huge thanks to everyone involved: the volunteers, the guides, and the donors. HEX is highly recommended!”

Mission

At Hero Expeditions our MISSION is to foster meaningful relationships that boost morale and promote healing for past/present military, first responders, youth, and families of the fallen through expeditions focused on camaraderie and engagement.

Background Statement

Hero Expeditions was formally founded in 2015, and the 100% volunteer-led organization served 31 participants that year. Since then, we have intentionally grown our programming capacity and procedures steadily and carefully, leaning on feedback from past participants and peers to mold how we work and engage with our beneficiaries. Maintaining contact after our participants return home is crucial to our engagement and care.

Before the conclusion of 2023, with the strong support of our volunteer team, ambassadors, past participants, donors, and community, Hero Expeditions will have served in excess of 125 participants from across the country on outings in four states.

We will carry this momentum into 2024, where we are excited to embark on more adventures than ever in areas we have not yet ventured. Our past participants and applicants have encouraged us to incorporate opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors in new and exciting ways, like whitewater rafting/kayaking, skiing/snowboarding, hiking, rock climbing, camping, nature retreats, mountain biking, and more. These are all on our radar for ways to expand our offerings next year and beyond!

We anticipate these new activities will expand our programming budget by about 30% in 2024. Our individual donors, both new and old, will be the backbone of raising the funds to make these events a reality. We hope our Giving Tuesday Campaign will be a great momentum builder heading into next year!
