Testimonials

"Hard to put into words what this extraordinary place has to offer...because the sky's the limit. I've literally seen it change people to get their hands and hearts into the land and river and history and the whole experience." ~ Trish Murtha, Artist, Loveland

"Being at Warriors Write retreat was wind in my sails! Sharing stories and learning that we are not alone in a group of dynamic, kind, smart women who have served in the military was a gift. I felt refreshed and inspired to use my voice and creativity after being at the retreat. Looking forward to writing and owning my story - this retreat was the perfect launch pad." ~Lindsey, Hawaii

"The Warriors Write retreat has forever changed me. I typically strive for the absence of misery (from physical and mental traumas), but this week I was actually happy. Not only was I able to develop new friendships with my veteran sisters, but I was able to rediscover a part of me that I thought I had lost." ~Michelle, Colorado

"The learning that happens when kids and horses come together is magical. Being around horses enables kids to authentically experience their own power, the consequences of their actions, the importance of listening and teamwork. I was so grateful to be a part of the outdoor education days. The outdoor experience is invaluable ~ it allows students, teachers, and facilitators to be present in a way that doesn't happen in the indoor classroom." ~Leslie Carter, Heart-J Center Volunteer

"The Heart-J Center outdoor retreats were a fantastic experience for the L.I.S.A. students from Mountain View High School and Garfield Elementary. We worked with the Heart-J Center to create a customized program that connected art and nature, and resulted in an inspirational and unforgettable field trip for our students and teachers."~Candice Ingold, Coordinator for the Loveland Integrated School of the Arts (L.I.S.A.), Thompson School District

Background Statement

The Heart-J Center for Experiential Learning at Sylvan Dale Ranch was founded to honor the legacy of Maurice and Tillie Jessup, who bought Sylvan Dale "on a borrowed shoestring" in the spring of 1946. Maurice and Tillie knew that they had found a special place and they set out to sharing this spot with tens of thousands of guests from around the world.

Without labeling the guest experience as "education" each visit to Sylvan Dale resulted in some learning experience - whether it was riding a horse for the first time, learning to fish, taking a spin at the square dance, or learning the words to an old cowboy song. Maurice and Tillie believed in the power of education to make a difference in the world and they knew that there was no better place to learn by experience than the beautiful valley they called home.

Heart-J Center launched in 2014 to make the most of Sylvan Dale's 3,000 acres as an extraordinary outdoor classroom offering programs in wildlife biology, botany, geology, archeology, local history, sustainable agriculture, land conservation and so much more. Heart-J Center's offerings make the most of the outdoor setting, cultural heritage and western lifestyle of Sylvan Dale Ranch. Since 2014, HJC has provided unforgettable learning experiences to more than 7,700 people from middle schoolers to university students to retirees.
