HeadQuarters helps to prevent crisis situations by enabling and promoting Mental Fitness. We focus on connecting community members to the right support at the right time.

Mental health is a fundamental aspect of our lives, yet all too often, it remains an afterthought until it becomes an overwhelming burden. Many individuals do not seek therapy or engage in preventive mental health measures until they find themselves in a state of crisis. Society has conditioned us to "tough it out" and deal with our issues independently, furthermore the majority of people cannot afford mental health services.

But we know that there is a better way. Preventative mental health support can avert crises and save lives. By nurturing Mental Fitness; the purposeful practice of taking care of one’s mind – we can transform our approach to mental health and move away from a crisis-driven system.

Your donation will support year-round Mental Fitness programming focused on social, emotional, physical and financial well-being.

MENTAL HEALTH FUND

The HeadQuarters Mental Health Fund has had a significant impact on the lives of people in our community. Erica, a Mental Health Fund recipient, shares the impact the fund has had on her life:

“My low self-esteem lead me to tolerate situations I should have never allowed...I would consistently put myself in a victim role, and was in an intimate relationship with an alcoholic and endured abuse. I was an accomplice to his illness.

My low self-esteem lead me to tolerate situations I should have never allowed. I went through neglect, psychological and physical abuse. I would consistently put myself in a victim role.

Now I refuse to be a victim. [I learned that] I am enough, I learned to love myself, I learned to set boundaries. I had to grab on to courage to be able to assume responsibility for my choices. I cannot change anybody, I just need to accept myself and move forward. I learned to feel my power, to stand in my power and be mindful of it one day at a time.

I am grateful for the funding provided through the Mental Health Fund, so I could engage in mental health services when I needed it the most.”

TESTIMONIALS

“Headquarters support for my clients through the Mental Health Fund has helped our immigrant population access mental health and substance use disorder treatment providing them the opportunity to engage in a safe and culturally appropriate space to heal." - Delfina Huergo, MS LPC

"I wanted to share my heARTfelt gratitude to HeadQuarters and Executive Director Angilina Taylor for your co-sponsorship with The Art Base for Art, Healing, and HOPE and my organization Creative Awakenings International. It has been a gift to partner with you this year to provide continued expressive art therapy modalities to individuals and groups in the Roaring Fork Valley. In addition your generous support through your Mental Health Fund, allowed a local individual who was experiencing recurring trauma, to receive 4 free sessions. These session proved invaluable to this person and without them, she would not have been able to afford therapy, or move through long term PTSD issues. I look forward to new collaborations in 2023. Thank you for all you do for our community and Roaring Fork Valley mental health providers."  -Sheri Gaynor, LCSW, Registered Expressive Arts Therapist, Owner, Creative Awakenings International

“The Fly Casting for the Soul workshop was a great alternative to traditional mental health services offered in the valley… As someone with anxiety and mild agoraphobia, I was at ease the entire time and am appreciative that it’s a completely affordable mental health tool that I can access.”

“The Common Roots Men’s Group by HeadQuarters has been one of the most powerful things I have ever experienced. Never in my life have I had the opportunity to speak so openly and candidly with a group of men about what I am going through. The commonality and brotherhood formed has been life changing.”  -Anonymous Male, Carbondale

Mission

HeadQuarters engages, educates, and empowers Mental Fitness paving the way for a healthy, vibrant community.

Mental Fitness is the purpose practice of taking care our mind; through this, we gain the tools and skills to cope with every day stressors, creating the resiliency to thrive.

Background Statement

HeadQuarters, formerly Aspen Strong, was founded as a response to our valley's suicide rate and has been an effort to get people to the right place at the right time while eliminating barriers to getting there. Mental illness and substance abuse rank among the top issues that have the greatest impact on health in our community. Hike Hope Heal, an event that raised money for the community's mental health fund, was the impetus for HeadQuarters. With support of the community and the founder of the Mental Health Fund, Lawrence Altman, HeadQuarters blossomed into an organization connecting community members to early-intervention tools and resources, supporting them via unique modalities and financial assistance, building their knowledge, and inspiring a sense of belonging.
