Happy Day Plants is the culmination of owner Jessica Birmingham's lifelong passion and dedication. For years, Jessica nurtured a wide variety of houseplants, all while dreaming of opening her own plant shop. The turning point came when her eldest daughter, Bailey, who has Down Syndrome, graduated from high school. The Birmingham family soon discovered the scarcity of employment opportunities for young adults like Bailey. Jessica's enduring love for plants, combined with her desire to empower individuals with special needs, inspired her to open a retail storefront on November 6, 2021, on Main Street in Downtown Longmont.
Over the past three years, Happy Day Plants has experienced tremendous growth and received overwhelming community support for its mission to provide meaningful job opportunities for adults with disabilities, who often face significant barriers to traditional employment. In June 2024, Happy Day Plants became a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. This transformation allows us to cultivate growth not only in the houseplants we nurture but also in the lives we touch.
Rest assured, our commitment to providing top-quality plants and exceptional service at our retail shop on Main Street remains unchanged. You can continue to rely on Happy Day Plants for all your houseplant needs, knowing that each purchase supports a greater cause.
At Happy Day Plants, we believe in cultivating growth, not just in the house plants we nurture in our shop, but in the lives we touch. Founded by Jessica Birmingham, a dedicated plant enthusiast, Happy Day Plants is more than just a plant shop in Downtown Longmont. Our mission is to provide meaningful job opportunities for adults with disabilities, who often face significant barriers to traditional employment. Through our work, we aim to make a positive impact on the lives of our team members and the broader community, demonstrating that with the right support and opportunities, everyone can flourish. Thank you for helping us care for a plant and grow a community.
Happy Day Plants is breaking down barriers that keep young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) from finding meaningful work, economic stability, and social connection. Many of these individuals have the skills and motivation to work, but local businesses haven’t always had the tools or encouragement to include them.
Through our programs that focus on employment, community engagement, and social interactions, we create real opportunities by offering consistent routines, individualized training, and a supportive environment that builds both skill and confidence.
Our employees grow more independent and empowered over time. The impact is spreading: we have a waitlist of 14 people eager to join us and local businesses asking how to adopt our model. When more employers follow this example, more residents with IDD can contribute, earn, and connect in ways that benefit everyone. Customers gain meaningful relationships, businesses strengthen their community impact and customer loyalty, and together we move toward a vision of Longmont as a model city for inclusion—where every person belongs, contributes, and thrives.
