High Altitude Basketball (HAB) is a community connected through the great game of basketball. We believe basketball is a fun sport that teaches life lessons that carry on long after we leave the court. HAB has a variety of programming from recreational to competitive to camps and clinics. Our mission is to provide basketball opportunities for all!

Since coming back from the Pandemic, our programming has been growing quickly. In 2022, we had four summer camps with 103 players in the gym. This year, we grew by 50% to over 150 players. Our competitive teams have been on the rise as well. Our first season back was Spring of 2022 where we had eight 8th grade boys and eight 8th grade girls make up two competitive teams. Spring of 2023, we grew to 27 competitive players for the boys on three teams: 5/6th Intro to Competitive, 7th Grade Boys Elite, and 8th Grade Boys Elite. Also, we grew our girls side by 50% and were able to have a 7th and 8th grade team.

We shifted our program format for recreational to consist of shorter sessions with more offerings. We primarily play 3v3 basketball because of the benefits it gives to all our players. Players have more space to create and learn, they touch the ball more every time they play, and it's often easier to teach the fundamentals. With limited court time, this model helps HAB use get the most out of what we do have.

In the Spring alone we have three, five week sessions for players to participate in. The last two years we've had over 200 registrations for these programs. Last spring, we started our first Little Hoopers program for 1st and 2nd graders, and it was a resounding success. Since then, HAB has offered more opportunities for this age group because of the awesome feedback and popularity.

All that being said, HAB strives to be the most affordable sports program in the Yampa Valley. HAB gives scholarships wherever needed as we take our mission very seriously to provide basketball opportunities for all. Currently, HAB has one full-time staff member and an awesome Board of Directors that helps make all these opportunities possible.

Our aim is to branch out and reach more players throughout the Yampa Valley. We've had successful camps in Hayden and look forward to providing more basketball opportunities there this year and eventually beyond.

As we look ahead, we have new programs starting up. For the first time Fall 2023 we have a girls competitive 8th grade team that will lead right into their middle school season. Along with that, we have a varsity high school boys team that will compete in a couple tournaments this October as they prepare for another good season beginning in November.

HAB is only able to function because of it's awesome community. We depend heavily on our volunteers and parents to make basketball opportunities possible. HAB is continually grateful and amazed by the generosity of the Steamboat Community through time, collaborations, and donations; and we hope to continue to serve the community for many years to come.
