Background Statement
Gunnison Hinsdale Youth Services (GHYS), dba Gunnison Valley Mentors (GVM) was founded in 1990 by a group of citizens who knew that caring adults can make a positive difference in the lives of youth. The greatest protective factor against our high poverty rates, substance abuse rates and child maltreatment rates is a positive relationship with a caring adult. Original services were dedicated to youth in the juvenile justice system but now include a broader range of referred youth. A change in leadership in 2006 ultimately put the organization on its current path. A shift in board culture and focus on mentoring has led to 1) program growth in numbers served and impact, 2) completion and opening of the 8th St School Mentoring Center, and 3) amplified community and statewide presence.
