Background Statement
Grupo Folklórico del Pueblo was originally founded in 1996 as the Ballet Folklórico de Pueblo (BFDP) by Velma, Sara, and Jimmy Newmoon Roybal. Since its inception, the GFDP has evolved and changed to better meet the needs of the community as a non-profit organization, to serve students of various backgrounds and ages (3 years to adult).
Our commitment to the preservation of our community’s folk culture is our main focus which is executed through our curriculum, experiences, and leadership. Grupo Folklórico del Pueblo has tirelessly worked on our curriculum to include; history, culture, somatics, and Spanish and English literacy. In enhancing our cultural experiences we have traveled, learned and performed throughout the USA, Mexico, South America and Europe.
Grupo Folklórico del Pueblo hosts a dance conference where groups gather to network, educate, dance and make friends from other cities and states. We also host an annual Dia de los Muertos show where our students are able to showcase their artistic and technical skills of traditional and nontraditional Mexican Folklore dances. As a group steeped in the community we often collaborate and or compose presentations for our community.
Throughout the decades we have continued to provide for our community through art, dance and education and are excited to continue this path in the future.
