Grow Local Colorado has been growing in our community since 2009. We started out with one garden in Denver’s Civic Center Park and five volunteers. We now grow in 20 locations and have approximately 1,700 volunteers dedicating 2,000 hours every season. Our gardens are in Denver Parks, at the Governor’s Mansion, churches, at partnering organizations’ facilities and even in a few back yards. Each year our gardens provide more than 10,000 pounds of local, organic, fresh produce to over two dozen organizations serving those with limited access to healthy food. Our mission is to promote sustainability, food equity and local community.
Starting six years ago Grow Local started gleaning fruit trees in the Denver area. Annually we are picking around 10,000 pounds of fruit and sharing with food relief organizations. The slightly bruised fruit goes to schools that teach students how to process and enjoy imperfect produce. Volunteers that assist with the gleaning are invited to take a bag of produce home to enjoy the bounty.
During the off-season we provide courses on seed saving, growing in our challenging climate, how to start seedlings, and sustainable agriculture practices.
Our volunteers allow us to accomplish these major feats. We welcome ages 7 to 90 in our gardens. Everyone has a talent and skill that benefits our community. Come share yours in one of our gardens or under a fruit tree.
Grow Local's mission is threefold: to regenerate our soil, our food system, our connection to nature; to promote food equity so everyone has access to clean, healthy, delicious food; and to create community, welcoming all to be a part of sharing the bounty of nature and helping address the many problems impacting our community.
