The Ouray County Plaindealer is a scrappy, independent, locally owned newspaper that has kept the community informed since 1877. With your help, we'd like to keep doing just that.
In the past six years, since Mike Wiggins and Erin McIntyre invested in the Plaindealer, we've brought you important stories that would not have otherwise been told. Stories with tangible impact.
- We didn't stop reporting when our newspapers were stolen from the racks in 2023, by someone who didn't want you to read the article about arrests of three men accused of sex assault at the former police chief's home.
- We kept digging and told you about the problems with the former Ouray sheriff, giving the community the information it needed to remove him with the county's first recall election.
- Our reporting led philanthropists to step forward and help finance the purchase of the Swiss Village mobile home park earlier this year, allowing longtime residents to preserve their affordable housing and remain part of the community.
These are just a few recent examples of stories that wouldn't have been told without our work.
Those of you who rely on the Plaindealer each week to stay informed know how hard we work. We not only help keep government accountable, we also tell the stories of your neighbors and friends, celebrations and challenges in our community.
