Grant Street Reach

Grant Avenue Street Reach is now actively working and supporting the I70 Street Reach Food Bank in Bennett, Colorado.  This food bank which opened in the late spring of this year with support from GASR is now serving an area from the East side of Aurora, Watkins, Bennett to and including Deer Trail along I70. This is an area of relatively low income, migrant farm workers, and high unemployment.  

The food bank provides clients with an opportunity to acquire fresh produce, fruit, breads and desserts along with various meats as they are available.  It provides each client with a box containing staple items such as rice, beans, canned goods and other shelf items.  The foodbank serves on the second and fourth Saturday of each month.  As word of this benefit has circulated in the community, the food bank is now serving in excess of 100 families on each serving day.

Grant Street Reach (“Street Reach”), has been serving the Denver community for 29 years. Operating primarily as a Soup Kitchen, Street Reach provided hot meals every Monday to its clients. In 2015 alone, Street Reach served close to 50,000 meals to its patrons. Aside from food service, Street Reach provided food (canned goods, fresh vegetables, and fruit), clothing, blankets, toiletries, diapers, and baby formula to its clients. 

Some Background: After 25 years of serving the hungry in downtown Denver, in 2019 'Street Reach' lost its kitchen location due to gentrification. After serious discussions, it was decided that providing a single meal each week was not enough.  It is better to provide clients with sufficient food to sustain them for a week or more via a food bank system. The town of Bennett was chosen as the logical location for the food bank due to its location along I-70 and the lack of food resources for marginalized families in the Watkins to Deer Trail area.  Then after rebuilding a cabinet workshop into a warehouse, obtaining freezers, refrigerators, and other equipment, the foodbank was opened in late May of this year. The food bank is partnered with Food Bank of the Rockies and works closely with other food banks in the area to provide support as needed.
