Whether you're an experienced birder, or just want to learn more about the amazing wildlife and important habitats in the Grand Valley and Mesa County, we're glad you are interested in our organization.

Protect the birds and we protect the Earth. Like you, birds depend on Colorado's incredible lands and waters. Your donation will protect them by funding conservation science, education, and policy in Colorado. Help us connect people to birds and nature, because where birds thrive, people prosper.

Grand Valley Audubon Society (GVAS) strives to provide information, education, and activities to help everyone get outside and connect with the spectacular natural area we call home.

Mission

We strive to foster an appreciation for birds and other wildlife, preserve a diversity of habitats, and advocate for a sustainable healthy environment through education, research and individual action.

Background Statement

One of GVAS’ main projects is maintenance and improvement of our 57 acre Nature Preserve, which is open to the public for walking and wildlife watching. Our larger and ongoing need for funding is the Wetland Improvement Project. The goal is to enhance this former set of gravel pits and ponds by increasing the wetland habitat available to migrating waterfowl, shorebirds, as well as endangered fish species. This multi-phase years-long project takes in the objective of enhancing almost 8 acres of wetland habitat and adding 1.6 acres of wet meadow. For more information, see the drop down Programs Menu below.

We are a local chapter of National Audubon. We offer bird and conservation oriented monthly programs and speakers during Fall, Winter & Spring. A local membership, where dollars remain with our chapter, offers a bi- monthly digital news blast for events and updates, a quarterly newsletter and many events through the year including Christmas, New Year and Spring bird counts (all abilities welcome!) as well as monthly bird walks to places near and far. We underwrite transportation and bird bander costs for a half-day field trip experience to our Fall bird banding station at Connected Lakes State Park, reaching well over 800 students, and with opportunities for public engagement as well. There are opportunities for nest box monitoring with Bluebird populations, as well as monitoring and counting of our large Western Screech Owl population here in the Grand Valley.
