Girls With Books!

A nonprofit organization

Dear Friends and supporters,

I am writing to ask for your financial support of Girls with Books! as we strive to transform the lives of girls across South Sudan and in the Refugee camps in Northern Uganda.

Thanks to the generosity of donors like you, we are currently supporting the education of 106 South Sudanese girls in various schools and refugee camps. By the end of this year--our 19th year of service--we will celebrate the graduation of 15 high school girls, bringing the total number of graduates to 265 over the past six years. This milestone reflects the lasting impact of your commitment to girls’ education.

Why We Need Your Help

Our program is unique because we work with girls from diverse South Sudanese communities, bringing them together to learn, grow, and build peace in a country still struggling with inter-tribal conflict. By fostering education and unity among South Sudanese. We are contributing to long-term peace-building efforts in South Sudan.

Your generous donation will help us:

•    Continue education for South Sudanese girls

•    Expand of our programs and reach

•    Equip our new Juba office to support students and graduates

•    Offer digital literacy training and access to technology for our scholars

•    Fund our Leadership Circle program to promote leadership and peace-building initiatives

Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference in the lives of these young girls. Your support empowers them to build a brighter future for themselves, their families, and their communities.

By supporting GWB!, you're not just educating girls – you're building peace, fostering leadership, and creating opportunities for a brighter future in South Sudan. Please consider donating today to help us continue this vital work. Together, we can empower the next generation of South Sudanese women leaders.

Thank you for your ongoing generosity and commitment to education and for being part of this incredible journey.

Sincerely,

Micklina Kenyi

Mission

The mission of Girls With Books! is to educate South Sudanese girls and young women to become peacebuilders and positive change-makers in South Sudan. We will focus on educating girls from many of the 64 ethnic groups in the country, bringing them together to help build peace where there has often been conflict. The combined effect of hundreds of girls graduating from school and taking their place as leaders in their community will have a powerful effect on the future of this young nation.

Background Statement

Effective October 1, 2022, Empowerment Through Education Foundation (ETE) and Project Education South Sudan (PESS) joined together and operate as one organization, known as Girls With Books!

The merger of two small and effective organizations allows us to help more South Sudanese girls and young women obtain an education. We combine the board member experience of two organizations who have each operated for 18 years in Sudan, and after independence, South Sudan. Since we have operated in different geographic areas of the country, we will now expand our reach. We will work in three locations: Bor, the capital of Jonglei state, Juba, the national capital of South Sudan, and in the refugee camps of northern Uganda, where over 800,000 South Sudanese have fled to escape unrest in their own country.

The merger allows us to streamline and unify programs under the leadership of Executive Director Micklina Kenyi, who came to the US at the age of 24 as a war refugee in 2003, became a US citizen in 2008 and received her master’s degree from CU in Educational Foundation Policy and Practice in 2014.
