$10,000 Goal

The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) established Friends of the National Center as an alumni and community engagement program in support of the NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research and UCAR’s Community Programs. The Friends mission extends to fundraising for science education, early-career initiatives, diversity, equity and inclusion programs, and innovation.

All donations received on Colorado Gives Day 2023 will support the Friends Education Fund. This fund focuses on providing professional development support to all of our internship and fellowship students as well as our early career. This fall the Friends Education Fund provided stipends to two NCAR early-career scientists to travel to the American Meteorological Society Annual Meeting, so they could present on their ground-breaking research. The Friends Education Fund also provides funding to all of our education programming.

MATCH OPPORTUNITY

For 2023, Senior Leadership at UCAR and NSF NCAR have made personal donations to create a $5,000 MATCH OPPORTUNITY for all Colorado Gives Day donations. That means all donations received will have double the impact. With your gifts, when we meet this match we will have raised $10,000 for the Friends Education Fund.

Giving Activity

Mission

Friends of the National Center helps to enhance interest in and understanding of the atmospheric and related sciences for all. Through special projects funded by Friends of the National Center we strive to reach diverse audiences and support the breadth of UCAR, NSF NCAR, and UCP research-from predicting weather to modeling climate and understanding the impacts of global, regional and local changes on society and the environment.

The purpose of Friends of the National Center is to:

• Encourage young people to pursue careers in science and technology

• Promote broader awareness and understanding of science

• Support the professional development of our early-career scientists and students

• Foster innovation in climate analytics and Earth System science research

• Provide opportunities for historically marginalized communities to engage in NSF NCAR science and UCAR outreach efforts

Background Statement
