Friendly Harbor

A nonprofit organization

Friendly Harbor is a house of refuge for adults who happen to have a mental illness. Friendly Harbor is a readily accessible place where consumers can come to end their isolation, improve self-esteem, integrate into the community, and become more adapt at interpersonal skills.

One of our young female consumers lives with active symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia. She is on a regimen of psychiatric medication and continues to hear voices daily. She comes to Friendly Harbor several days a week where she participates in groups and checks in with a peer specialist. She says, "I feel like I can be myself here." Often, she studies at the Harbor and enjoys coming here to take a break from her assisted living facility. She has learned to cope with persistent symptoms and has managed to pursue her goals to become an accountant regardless of hearing distracting voices and having difficulty concentrating. She has been attending Pueblo Community College for the past several years and will be graduating next month with an Associate Degree and she plans to continue to attain her bachelor's degree.

Friendly Harbor Community Center promotes wellness and recovery from mental health and substance issues by providing a safe environment and connecting people to healthy relationships and organizations through Peer Support.

Background Statement

Friendly Harbor opened its doors in 1996 after two years of intensive planning by our founders. Robin Hill struggled with often debilitating bipolar disorder. He knew the need for a place for persons with mental illness to go, feel safe, and connect with others who were experiencing similar life experiences. Friendly Harbor was established so that adults with mental illness would have a place to congregate, reach out for support, and find the resources to get the help they needed. We are a peer to peer organization populated by adult consumers who are managing a wide range of diagnosed mental health issues. The majority of our consumers are disabled to some degree and rely on the generosity of the community to maintain the Harbor and keep our doors open.
