FREE Recovery Community

A nonprofit organization

FREE is a Spiritual Community for Addicts, Loved Ones of Addicts, and Spiritual Refugees. Many consider it their spiritual home, their church, or just a safe place where WE DON'T SHAME! We are experiencing an epidemic in our community and FREE is stepping up to meet the growing needs.

Testimonials

One Community member, Kavita D., posted recently on Facebook: "I felt like I didn't have to worry about being shameful of my history and I could just be here and be a part of....that's the thing about addiction...it isolates you. This place of Coffee and FREE and Community it's a place of inclusion."

An online attendee posted: I honestly was afraid of Saturday nights when I was first getting sober, afraid I wouldn't "enjoy" myself anymore, as if being fall down drunk was "fun".... I look forward to my Saturday nights now like I never imagined I would...... I am so grateful for FREE spiritual community and the love I feel from each of you.

Very recently two un-related individuals approached Rev. Ryan after their first Saturday night attendance and literally proclaimed "FREE has saved my life tonight. Thank you."

"I didn't pull the trigger" was the Celebration shared by one FREE attendee during a Saturday night service. Unfortunately the need for our outreach is real and growing, likely more than we even realize.

Mission

FREE's Mission is to Break the Silence of Addiction while creating space for Healing, Recovery and Spiritual Connection.

Background Statement

Rev. Ryan Canaday is an ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church and a recovering alcoholic who has been sober since January 2013. He and his wife, Tami, co-founded FREE in June 2018. Initially launched in their backyard, FREE was created as a welcoming space for Addicts, Loved Ones of Addicts, and Spiritual Refugees to come together in community.

As FREE quickly grew, it moved from the Canadays' backyard to a retail location off Arapahoe Road in Greenwood Village by November 2018. Despite COVID-related challenges, FREE continued to expand and, by 2020, relocated to a renovated 12,500-square-foot building near DU Campus.

Today, FREE creates space for over 35 recovery support meetings and live streams that reach viewers nationwide. FREE offers a variety of recovery-focused events, including Sober Open Mic Nights and trauma-informed yoga, and provides recovery-focused child care on Saturdays at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. services. FREE is a community for the whole family.
