About The Foxhole Project

No one stands alone.

The Foxhole Project is a Colorado-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit built by and for veterans. Our mission is to reconnect Service Members, Veterans, and their Families by fostering a strong, supportive community through outdoor experiences, peer connection, and shared purpose. Life after service changes all of us. Some thrive immediately. Others take time to find their footing. What nearly every veteran misses is the camaraderie. The shared mission. The trust. The sense that someone has your six.

The Foxhole Project exists to rebuild that connection.

We create outdoor, nonclinical spaces where veterans and families gather around campfires, trails, coffee tables, and shared work. Not as patients. Not as case numbers. As peers. This community is open to veterans who are thriving, transitioning, rebuilding, or simply looking for people who understand.

What We Do

  • Campfire Socials - Twelve monthly gatherings where veterans and families build trust, share experiences, and strengthen community in relaxed settings.
  • Waypoint Retreats - Low-barrier weekend outdoor retreats that focus on camaraderie, leadership, and peer connection. Our first retreat is piloting this year, with plans to expand as funding and staffing allow.
  • Skill Building Workshops - Quarterly hands-on workshops where veterans teach, mentor, and develop practical skills in collaboration with peers and community members.
  • Resource Navigation - Trusted peer guidance connecting veterans and families to existing benefits, housing support, employment services, and local resources.
  • Community Engagement - Partnerships with veteran service organizations, public agencies, and nonprofits to strengthen the regional veteran support network.
  • Digital Foxhole (Online Community) - A moderated online community where veterans and families connect year-round through conversation, peer support, game nights, resource sharing, and virtual gatherings. The Digital Foxhole extends the campfire beyond geography, creating consistent access to connection for those who cannot attend in-person events.
  • Expedition Retreats - A future growth phase designed to offer extended backcountry leadership experiences as organizational capacity expands.

Why It Matters

Each year, more than 200,000 service members transition from military service into civilian life. Many leave behind not just a career, but a built-in community. The loss of camaraderie can be quiet but significant.

Research consistently shows that veterans engaged in strong peer networks are more likely to seek support early, maintain resilience, and stay connected to the community. Connection is not a slogan. It is infrastructure.

The Foxhole Project strengthens that infrastructure by ensuring veterans and families have spaces to gather, lead, and support one another long after service ends.

Because no one serves alone. And no one should come home alone.

Our Vision

A connected veteran community where no one feels isolated. Where camaraderie is rekindled, purpose continues, and leadership grows across trails, campfires, and every rally point we build together.

Mission

To reconnect service members, veterans, and their families by fostering a strong, supportive community through outdoor experiences, peer connection, and shared purpose. Creating spaces where they can rely on each other, grow together, and rebuild camaraderie beyond service.

Background Statement

The Foxhole Project is a Colorado based 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2025 by U.S. Army veteran Craig Rauwolf to strengthen veteran community connection in the San Luis Valley and beyond. Built from lived experience, the organization was created to reconnect Service Members, Veterans, and their Families by fostering a strong, supportive community through outdoor retreats, Campfire Socials, skill building events, and peer connection.

After military service, many veterans miss the camaraderie, shared mission, and built in community that once came naturally. The Foxhole Project focuses on rebuilding that sense of connection through peer led, outdoor experiences that are accessible, welcoming, and open to all veterans and families.

Programs are intentionally low barrier and community driven. Veterans gather not as clients or case numbers, but as peers. Through shared meals, shared challenge, shared leadership, and shared stories, participants strengthen relationships that extend beyond a single event.

The organization operates with a clear vision: a connected veteran community where no one feels isolated, where camaraderie is rekindled, and where leadership and purpose continue long after service. Through structured retreats, facilitator development, and local partnerships, The Foxhole Project is building sustainable systems of connection that reinforce belonging, trust, and long term community resilience among those who have served and the families who stand beside them.
