Mission

To improve the lives of companion animals in Montezuma and Dolores Counties, Colorado. We help pets and the people who care about them.

Background Statement

For Pets' Sake Humane Society is an organization of volunteers who have been working to improve the lives of companion animals in Montezuma and Dolores Counties for 40 years. Our major programs include:

• Helping with the cost of spaying and neutering pets

• Providing funds to help low-income families with emergency veterinary bills

• Donating pet food to low-income families for their dogs and cats

• Controlling outdoor, stray, and abandoned cat populations humanely through our Feral Cat Project (Trap - Neuter - Vaccinate - Return)

• Fostering unwanted cats and dogs until they are ready for adoption.

For Pets' Sake is supported entirely by public contributions, grants, and fund-raising. As an all-volunteer 501(c)3 organization with no facility or salary expenses, FPS spends 96% of the revenue generated yearly on direct services to local animals.

The major focus of FPS is helping family pets and their owners. In our rural and rather impoverished area, many people cannot adequately care for themselves and their families, which leaves little for their pets. FPS offers a safety net for local pet owners by directly giving these families what they need: a way to afford vet bills, and food for their pets. FPS also helps homeless animals: outdoor, stray and abandoned cats, and special needs homeless pets such as elderly or injured dogs or cats who generally have no other options.

For Pets' Sake began in 1984 as a group of volunteers interested in fostering dogs and cats. For Pet's Sake, Inc. was incorporated in 1987 and received 501(c)(3) status in 1995.

At first, FPSHS focused on fostering and then adopting out individual cats and dogs. By the mid-1990's, FPSHS directors realized that the best way to reduce suffering is to prevent the birth of unwanted animals, and FPS began to offer and emphasize spay/neuter assistance. Within a few years FPS expanded their services for family pets to include emergency vet bill assistance. In 2010, FPS initiated a program to provide pet food to low-income families so they could adequately feed their dogs and cats.

In 2009, FPS recognized outdoor, stray and abandoned cats were a major animal welfare problem in this area and initiated a Feral Cat Project. This project uses Trap-Neuter-Return to capture outdoor cats, spay or neuter them, vaccinate, and provide any vet care they need before releasing them to live out their lives in their colonies.

There are now major areas in Colorado with a shortage of adoptable pets, which has created new opportunities for our area's unwanted cats and dogs. Transport is now a large part of what we do: transferring many unwanted animals, including those needing major medical care, to the Front Range and the I-70 corridor between Grand Junction and Eagle.

In addition to expanding the scope of our services over time, FPS has also expanded geographically. From its beginnings in the town of Cortez, CO, For Pets' Sake expanded to serve all of Montezuma and Dolores Counties, Colorado plus parts of San Juan County, Utah. FPS service area includes the Ute Mountain Ute reservation, where FPS has been supporting animal welfare efforts since the mid 1990's.
