Your support goes directly to providing critical programs, services and support to men struggling with mental health challenges. Our model is based on research that tells us that spending time in nature, developing healthy hobbies such as fly fishing, surrounding ourselves with a supportive community, and engaging in professional therapy has an overwhelmingly positive effect on men's mental health.
Our RETREATS are life-changing experiences that bring men from around the country together for a weekend of fishing, group counseling and comradery. Our powerful group sessions are led by therapists who specialize on men’s issues. Some of the most accomplished anglers in the region provide the fly fishing instruction. The combination of these activities give men the opportunity to be their real, vulnerable, and honest selves which sets the stage for tremendous growth in a short amount of time.
When not on retreats we are hosting OPEN MENS GROUPS in the Denver area. During these Groups, a licensed therapist facilitates and provides guidance on how to best navigate life’s challenges and personal situations. The purpose of the Group, like all Fishing the Good Fight programs, is to help men be better men; for themselves, their families, their friends, and their communities.
In addition to direct programming, our scholarship program subsidizes the cost of individual therapy to men who cannot afford the entire cost. We believe talk therapy is one of the most effective ways to address mental health challenges and we do not want cost to be a barrier.
We recognize that mental health challenges affect millions of people regardless of gender. If you look at the statistics, however, it’s easy to see why programming for men is so important.
Over 6 million men suffer from depression each year and this depression often goes undiagnosed. Nearly 1 in 10 men experience some form of depression or anxiety but less than half seek treatment. “Men are less likely than women to seek help for depression, substance abuse and stressful life events due to: social norms, reluctance to talk, and downplaying of symptoms” (Mental Health America).
The rate of suicide is highest in middle-aged men. In 2021, men died by suicide 3.9x more than women. On average, there are 132 suicides per day. Males accounted for 69.68% of suicide deaths in 2021.
With your support we can improve all lives by serving men facing mental health challenges.
To improve all lives by serving men facing mental health challenges.
Over 15 years ago, Jennings Hester began struggling with anxiety and depression. Like most men, he wasn't aware that his symptoms were treatable. He brushed these symptoms off the same way he brushed off injuries in sports, thinking that it would improve in time. The 10+ years between the onset of symptoms and his first therapy session were a very dark period in his life. He wished he had access to a community where talking about mental illness was not taboo, and was instead encouraged.
This is why he founded Fishing the Good Fight in 2019.
Hester says, "Initially, we didn't know exactly what we wanted to do or how best to help; but we knew we needed to do something. It started out with donations to men's mental health organizations and has since evolved to weekend wellness retreats and subsidized mental health services.
I knew we were onto something on our first retreat in Lake George. I watched five total strangers open up, get vulnerable, support each other, and catch a few fish in the process. Those five individuals still stay in touch, have tough conversations, fish, and continue their wellness journey together."
