Babies don't come with instructions

That’s why we’re here. For over 40 years Great Expectations has provided reliable guidance and support to new and expectant parents in Garfield, Pitkin, and western Eagle counties. We work hard to make sure that all those expecting or caring for a new baby have the capacity and support to achieve their full potential.  From Aspen to Parachute, from pregnancy to preschool, we’ll be with you every step of the way.

Our core home visiting programs—Healthy Families America and Nurse-Family Partnership—are among the most effective maternal home visiting models in the country. Our family support specialists and registered nurses help parents raise healthy babies and build strong families, supporting them in setting goals, identifying individual needs, overcoming barriers, and obtaining community services.

Our parent support groups bring families together to learn, share, and grow. Through Circle of Parents—a national evidence-based program—and MotherWise—a six-week curriculum focused on healthy relationships and positive parenting—we create safe spaces where parents support one another through the challenges and joys of raising children.

We serve diverse families beyond any single population. Our services are confidential, available to all, and absolutely free.

Mission

The mission of Great Expectations is to strengthen and empower families, foster the optimum development of children, and prevent child abuse and neglect. We envision a community in which all those expecting a child or caring for an infant have the capacity and support to achieve their full potential as parents.

Background Statement

Founded in 1983 as Family Visitor Programs, Great Expectations has grown to serve more than 10,000 families in Garfield, Pitkin, and western Eagle counties. Our core programs—Healthy Families America and Nurse-Family Partnership—reflect decades of research and practice in child and maternal health. We support those expecting and caring for a new baby.

Our home visiting models are built on decades of national research. In randomized clinical trials, these programs have shown:

• 70% reduction in pregnancy complications;

• 56% reduction in emergency room visits;

• 50% reduction in language delays;

• 67% reduction in behavioral and intellectual problems;

• 48% reduction in child abuse and neglect.
