Background Statement

FYR Denver currently works with kids and teens in the immediate neighborhood, as well as those in residential treatment with the Third Way Centers. Our workouts take place at Mach 983 Crossfit, CrossFit Broadway, Phoenix Multisport as well as the Pontiac campus of Third Way. At the Pontiac location, we work with Third Way kids exclusively, holding small classes of 8 to 10 teens who are all higher risk (e.g., have experienced some form of abuse, have no home to return to, or have significant mental health concerns). Our hope is to follow kids from the locked facility, to their residential treatment center, to their first apartment when they emancipate through the Third Way program. We have successfully engaged 8 students. Our goal is to facilitate a workout habit in all who participate.

In collaboration with the Hope Online Learning Academy (K-12), we typically have 20 to 30 students per class. In all, Steve's Club Denver serves approximately 40 to 55 students per week, Some of them receiving 2 to 3 workouts in a week. Our estimated number of encounters is 60 to 80 per week.

Other components of our existing program include mentorship and nutrition. Although these aspects have been slower to develop than the workouts, several students and adults have interest in pursuing mentor relationships that extend beyond the gym. Nutritional education is scheduled to start later in October with a registered nutritional therapist.
