TESTIMONIALS

"Receiving FNREL scholarships the past three years has allowed me to focus on achieving excellence in my studies and pursuing opportunities relating to natural resources law by having less financial burden from paying tuition. These opportunities include attending various FNREL events such as webinars and travel to institutes, where I have gained valuable industry knowledge. The scholarships have also encouraged me to pursue courses in oil and gas, energy, and environmental law while leading the Energy Law Club in our law faculty. My involvement with the Foundation has motivated me to continue contributing to natural resources law as I begin my legal career. Thank you to the FNREL for their continued support of my legal education!

"There are no words to express my gratitude to the Foundation for Natural Resources and Energy Law for the scholarship gifts it has bestowed upon me during law school. With my professional background in oil and natural gas, I know how precious the earth's resources are and believe their responsible development is the key to the future. Because of the Foundation's gift, I was able to give more focus to my studies and develop professional relationships with Foundation members which have been instrumental in launching me into my second career as an attorney. I am thankful to the Foundation and its generous donors for investing in my future."

Natalie Boldt | University of Denver Sturm College of Law

"The FNREL scholarship provided me with more than needed tuition funds... It also introduced me to the Foundation and its members - an even more valuable benefit.  I recently attended the Annual Institute in Vail courtesy of the Foundation Scholarship. At the Institute I expanded my interest in natural resources law; spoke with leading practitioners; and made several connections that led to conversations about future employment. I look forward to continuing my engagement with the Foundation, am grateful for these opportunities, and appreciate the donors who make this important work possible."

Mission

The Foundation for Natural Resources and Energy Law is an educational, non-profit organization dedicated to the scholarly and practical study of all aspects of natural resources and energy law. We value collegiality and bring together lawyers, professionals, academics, and students to learn and network in a supportive environment where all participants are valued.

Background Statement

In 1955, a group of lawyers from the Rocky Mountain region recognized the need for a mineral law institute that addressed important issues arising in the public lands states. They decided to organize a conference in which law professors, practitioners, government personnel, and others could gather and share their expertise on topics related to public lands, mining, and oil and gas law. The "First Annual" mineral law institute, held later that year, was such a success that the lawyers realized they needed to create an organization to carry on the effort, and thus the Foundation was born.

The consensus among the founders was that the organization would be sponsored by universities, bar associations, and industry associations, and that it would not be politically oriented. Instead it would reflect the collaboration of sponsoring organizations dedicated to professional education. From the beginning, the Annual Institute had a family-friendly focus, and The Foundation was more than just a business organization.

Over the years, the scope of programming has expanded dramatically, covering renewable energy, environmental protection, water law, and other areas. Special Institutes, Short Courses, international programs, and online programs have been added.

A publications program was created to meet the needs of the practicing mineral law bar and other resources professionals, with the flagship American Law of Mining, the Law of Federal Oil and Gas Leases, the Landman's Legal Handbook, and model forms. Other publications continue to be added.

All of The Foundation's programs, publications, online resources, and other projects result from tremendous commitments of time and talent from its members. The voluntary efforts of The Foundation's members have built the organization into a global learning community of colleagues and friends, known worldwide for its expertise, objectivity, and practicality.
