Background Statement
Dr. Richard Krugman became the director of the Kempe Center in 1981.……..
On August 22, 1983 Lori Poland was a 36 month old little girl who was playing in front of her home with her brother while their father painted the house. When Lori's father went inside to get the kids a popsicle, an orange Datsun pulled up with the passenger door already opened. The man inside asked Lori if she liked candy. Like any sugar-loving 3 year old, Lori excitedly said yes and went with the man to "get candy." Lori was taken to the mountains outside of the city and was sexually abused, then placed 15 feet below ground into an outhouse pit where she stayed for 3 days until bird watchers heard her crying and found her.
Three weeks later, Lori was taken to the Kempe center after identifying her abductor in a line-up at the local police station. Lori conducted her first forensic interview with a Psychologist, David Jones where she described everything "the bad man" had done in great detail. This interview led to her abductor making a plea bargain and being sent to prison. Lori spent the next 2 years getting services at the Kempe Center and working with David Jones to find healing and security within herself again.
Fast forward 15 years…. Dr. Krugman later became the Dean of the Medical School at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Lori called him for an interview in order to complete an AP paper in a class. Lori and Dr. Krugman began a relationship that initially meant a sporadic lunch connecting and sharing. In 2010 Lori completed 3 different internships and post graduate certificate clinical work at the Kempe Center and began to build what is now a wellness center consisting of 5 mental health therapists, an acupuncturist, a massage therapist, a chiropractor, nutritionist and an essential oils educator. Lori asked Dr. Krugman if he would mentor her professionally, and after many more frequent lunches, breakfasts and conversations, Dr. Krugman made a suggestion. "There is a national effort supporting nearly every organ, every body part and 24 genes, yet nothing for child abuse and neglect. What do you say we try and make that happen?" Lori responded with a Yes. (because you don't say no to man like Dr. Krugman).
So the journey began. We know it will take a new way of looking at things. We know there will be a lot resistance, fear and uncertainty as we trudge forward in this effort. All of those are the little things when it pairs with the need. We are on a mission, one that will be lengthy, time consuming and difficult. And we believe so much in the cause, we are ready to rally the troops and make things happen.
