Beyond the creation of free medical education, Emergency Medical Minute (EMM) has become an educational and professional development experience for its team members. Our interdisciplinary team comprises Emergency Medicine physicians, nurses, EMTs, scribes, medical residents, medical students, pre-med students, and post-undergraduate professionals to draft, record, and produce our content. EMM is proud to offer mentorship to aspiring healthcare professionals looking to make a difference in distributing new knowledge to clinicians worldwide. We view this professional development aspect of the organization as a vital part of our culture and an equally important piece of serving our mission by providing the next generation of healthcare professionals with an opportunity to learn from mentors as they progress through their journeys into medicine.
The Emergency Medical Minute disseminates relevant medical education to clinicians and the public through various avenues, striving to be a resource for medical professionals wanting to enhance their knowledge base and practice.
The Emergency Medical Minute is a non-partisan organization that provides quality open-access medical education to health professionals and public for the enhancement of knowledge. The goal of EMM is to provide an accessible media platform where professionals discuss and provide information of educational relevance that can be used as a catalyst to improve local, national, and global communities. EMM will encourage healthcare professionals to stay up to date with the most recent medical advances and best practices.
Emergency Medical Minute (EMM) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Denver, Colorado. We provide local clinicians and the general public with relevant and up-to-date medical research and advancements in emergency medicine through our podcast, case studies, and other written materials. We also host educational events and conferences which benefit local communities and organizations through philanthropic donations.
EMM was created by a diverse group of clinicians out of Swedish Medical Center's emergency department. These clinicians consisted of Don Stader (emergency medicine physician), Rachael Duncan (pharmacist), Colleen Decker (ER nurse), and Jack Spartz (former ER scribe and current EM PGY1 at Denver Health). What originally started out as an idea to provide medical education to physicians and nurses at Swedish has later developed into a useful tool across hospitals in the Denver Metro Area.
With growing interests from other facilities and organizations, EMM has become a valuable resource not only for physicians and nurses but also for paramedics, EMTs, pharmacists, and students within the medical field. Furthermore, we have also sparked interest within the general public as our podcast is being heard across 161 countries worldwide with over 4.2 million total downloads. Our first content consisted of a series of short, educational lectures. These lectures were given by emergency medicine physicians and recorded during their shifts. These mini-lectures, known as Medical Minutes, address a variety of medical topics frequently seen within the emergency department as well as the rare, special cases that are not so frequent. Since then, we have produced multiple podcast series within our own recording studio which is currently based at Mile High Ambulance. These Medical
Minutes are edited by a team of volunteers and later released as podcasts across all major hosting sites and distributed through various social media platforms.
In addition, EMM has since hosted several large educational events around the Denver Metro Area. With the help from sponsors and donors, we are able to put on events that are dedicated to giving back to our communities. For instance, our "Dreamland in Denver" event was able to raise $25,000 for organizations like the Harm Reduction Center and the Colorado Consortium for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention which combats the opioid crisis. Most recently, EMM partnered with Children's Hospital Colorado's Department of Palliative Medicine and Denver Hospice's Footprints program to host "Palliative", a deep dive into the nuance of pediatric palliative care on the CU Anschutz campus.
