Education Pioneers

A nonprofit organization

Education Pioneers exists to identify, train, connect, and inspire a new generation of leaders dedicated to transforming the U.S. education system so that all students receive a quality education. We place new leaders directly into high-performing education organizations and develop/connect rising leaders already working in the field, offering a unique and cost-effective solution for these organizations to secure top talent, build the capacity of their teams to accelerate progress, and ultimately scale proof points of excellence to reach more students.

Testimonials

Our Education Pioneers Fellows are making an impact on important initiatives, creating valuable resources for our schools, and providing fresh perspectives on our work.
- Shayne Spalten, Chief Human Resources Officer, Denver Public Schools

Education Pioneers has filled a real niche by recognizing that school districts and public charter organizations desperately need, but often don't have, the budget or time to attract and keep top talent in positions outside of the classroom.
- Don Shalvey, Deputy Director, U.S. Program, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Mission

Education Pioneers' mission is to identify, train, connect, and inspire a new generation of leaders dedicated to transforming our education system so that all students receive a quality education.

Background Statement

In 2003, social entrepreneur Scott Morgan founded Education Pioneers to meet the need for more top talent in education and to provide emerging leaders with an entry point into rewarding education leadership careers. Scott began his career as a high school teacher in an under-resourced school in Montgomery, Alabama. Eager to help scale success across the education sector and improve outcomes for all students, Scott pursued a law degree from Stanford Law School. While serving as legal counsel for Aspire Public Schools in California, Scott witnessed firsthand the power of multidisciplinary teams comprised of individuals with diverse personal, professional, and academic backgrounds and united in their commitment to provide all students with a high-quality education. Scott also saw the need for more diverse, highly effective leadership across the education sector and envisioned creating a pathway for talented individuals to become leaders in education.

Our students need more than great teachers and principals; they need great leaders and managers throughout the education ecosystem who can overcome its complex challenges with the skills to set direction, build teams and culture, deploy valuable resources, and execute against goals. Demand for leadership talent continues to grow: a recent study of the "autonomous and accountable public schools sector" by EdFuel forecasts that the 50 largest cities in the nation will need 32,000 new mid- to senior-level leaders by 2023 to fuel the growing "education reform ecosystem" alone.

Education Pioneers began meeting the need for education leadership talent with 9 flagship education leadership Fellows serving key education organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2004. In the last 14 years, Education Pioneers has dramatically increased the number of leaders we support, the number of Partners and geographies we serve (including expanding into the Denver area in 2014), and the types of connections we foster while delivering consistently exceptional talent. Our national network now includes nearly 4,000 Pioneers whom we've selected and trained for high-leverage careers in the sector from tens of thousands of applicants, as well as 750+ Partners served to date in more than 20 U.S. cities.
