20 wonderful years of learning, growth, and community!

This year, our school proudly celebrates 20 years since its founding in 2005. Over two decades, we have remained committed to providing a high quality Montessori education that goes beyond academics to nurture the whole child.

Our school has become a respected cornerstone of the Durango community. We are grateful to all who have supported us on this journey and look forward to continuing to build a caring community that inspires lifelong learning and personal growth.

supporting 3 essential pillars of our school community...

New Playground at Mason Park:

“Play is the work of the child” - Maria Montessori

This year, DMS is raising funds to support the development of a new playground at Mason City Park. This park is used by our Lower and Upper Elementary students every day (M-F) for lunch and recess. By making playground improvements a priority for the city and collaborating on its design and completion, we aim to create a fun, safe place for our students to play and explore!

As frequent users of this play area, our school is dedicated to working together with the city to ensure the playground meets the needs of our students and the wider community. Our students are eager to help with this process as they write letters to the city to advocate for a new playground as well as create crafts and bake goods for sale to raise money for the playground development.

Student Scholarships:

We are thrilled to have welcomed so many new families as our school has expanded over the past year. As our presence and impact in the Durango community grow, we are committed to providing more financial assistance to families who wish to join us. We recognize that it is important for all students, regardless of financial background, to connect with and learn from a wide breadth of friends in our community. By making Montessori accessible to more families, we enrich our school and foster a truly diverse and inclusive environment. 14 students are receiving financial aid this 24/25 school year! That is 15% of our population. Please help us raise this percentage to help even more families!

Montessori Teacher Training & Professional Development:

Supporting ongoing Montessori teacher training and professional development for our staff is one of our school’s most important investments. We are excited to share that three of our lead teachers will complete their Montessori teacher training this year, bringing our total to four certified Montessori lead teachers with the goal to have all our lead teachers certified in the future. Investing in teacher development directly enriches our classrooms and ensures every student benefits from high-quality, authentic Montessori education.

Mission

We are a peaceful, nurturing Montessori school in partnership with families and our larger community, where children grow in lifelong purpose through curiosity and meaningful exploration.

Our vision is for DMS students to reach their full potential and develop a love of learning rooted in peace, respect for themselves, their community, and the environment. We envision DMS graduates becoming independent, engaged, peaceful global citizens.

Background Statement

At DMS we pride ourselves on being a leader in Montessori education and an organization that believes in experiential education for all. Mary Polino, educator and parent, founded DMS in 2005. Since then, DMS has grown from 1 classroom with only 13 students to serving 93 students and families this 2025/26 school year. DMS would not be what it is today without the support of dedicated families who believe in the benefits of a Montessori education for their child.

As we celebrate our 20th year, we are not slowing down! We are continuing to grow and expand our reach. As a school that values community, we know that students, teachers, and families are an invaluable part of this evolution. To spark this upward momentum, we are highlighting 3 areas of our school community that would greatly benefit from your financial support. Your donation has a lasting impact on the future of DMS and the opportunities and benefits we can provide our community.
