Supporting our botanical gardens means supporting the only public garden in southwest Colorado that is free, open to all, and maintained entirely by volunteers. We were an oasis for many during the pandemic and continue to guide visitors to best gardening practices and water-saving techniques.  The Durango Botanic Gardens are the 2024 Library Community Champion, a distinction reserved for volunteer organizations offering extraordinary service to the library and the community.

Testimonials

We’re happy and proud to be DBG members and to support a wonderful community organization as the Botanic Gardens!   All three of our children were born at old Mercy where now lie the beautiful plant life adorning the crest overlooking the river.   And now our grandchildren get to run along the fun garden trails!  Joann Hards

I have fallen in love with the Durango Botanic Gardens. It has become our go-to daily walk for ourselves and our dog, Cacteye, during our three-week stay here. We live about a block from the San Antonio River and are accustomed to taking daily one-hour ambles, so when we arrived here in Durango, we were looking for something similar. Durango Botanic Garden was it!   Monica Maeckl, Texas Butterfly Ranch

I encountered a woman in garden who volunteered that the garden was a healing place for her. Last spring spring she had been seeing a counselor about some difficult issues in her life. After her sessions, she would walk through the gardens to calm herself. She told me the gardens were like a meditation for her.  She was so thankful for them. I was quite touched. I guess we never  know how our work influences those around us.  Anonymous, as told to Kandye Dille, Docent Coordinator

Do give yourself the gift of time and check out this incredible jewel. The colors alone will blow you away.  (Stephanie Moran)

You all have achieved something so beyond the usual—it really is a testament to the human spirit at its best!  (Stephanie Moran)

Mission

Our mission is to create public gardens that demonstrate best practices, advance horticultural education, and celebrate the inspirational power of sustainable gardens.

Background Statement

The Durango Botanic Gardens (DBG) is an award-winning public garden dedicated to advancing best horticultural practices while also offering a peaceful, beautiful retreat for thousands of people. Located between the heavily used Animas River Trail and the Durango Public Library, the Gardens are a favorite for both locals and out of town visitors.

Be sure to visit our newest garden, the Literary Garden, near the West entrance to the library. The Literary Garden demonstrates–through plant selection and a website dedicated entirely to this new garden–how nature and gardens have influenced and informed many of our favorite authors and books.

In 2024 we began building and installing a new garden—the Community Venue Garden—which will eventually feature a stage and an opportunity for individuals and other non-profits to have a special place for public gatherings and performances inside a beautiful garden setting.

As an all-volunteer non-profit, we depend entirely on programs like Colorado Gives for the purchase of plants, trees, mulch, seeds, and much, much more. Your donation to Colorado Gives, naming us as a beneficiary, will keep this garden oasis in the middle of Durango beautiful and free to everyone to enjoy.
