Testimonials

"I've had dachshunds in my family since I was little. My grandma had dachshunds, My parents always had them growing up and once I moved out I've always had them. So I've had a lot of doxies in my life and they are my favorite breed. In 2014 I decided that my next doxie would be a rescue, my first rescue dog. Cadbury came from the Denver Dachshund Rescue and is truely one of the sweetest, most loving doxies I've had. It was clear that DDRT cared so much for their animals and made sure they were going to great homes. I have always felt supported and able to contact DDRT with any questions.

I've also recently become a foster for DDRT. It has been rewarding helping dogs that may not have had a chance otherwise and I've really enjoyed meeting potential new families and seeing the dogs go off to good homes. Denver Dachshund Rescue always does such complete home and reference checks that I've always been happy with the homes the pups are going to". Christie Swoboda

"I have had such a great experience with DDRT. I started out in January signing up as a foster not knowing anyone in the group or how that fostering would work out. I found out very quickly the this organization is extremely dedicated to the dogs that come to them in need of their forever home. It started with the home visit which Jamie and Elizabeth did. They were very thorough and made very sure that the dogs that I would be fostering would be in a safe place. Then I got my first foster Evie. She was a great little girl and she got a home very quickly which made me happy. Then I started to volunteer at the meet and greets and found out that there are lots of great people that are associated with DDRT. Going to the meet and greets has now become a weekly ritual for me and I look forward each week to meeting the awesome dogs and the even more amazing people. After many more fosters and meet and greets I am still happily going on strong. Recently I have gone from foster dad/volunteer to an adopter. I became extremely attached to one of my fosters and decided that she has found her forever home and adopted her and couldn't be more happy about it. She is an amazing girl that came to my home with her 5 two week old pups. She was an great mom and looked after her pups amazingly. When she was not doting over her pups she just wanted to cuddle on the couch with me or my wife. She stole both of our hearts. She also came to us with heartworm so we spent a few months with her as she went through the heartworm treatment. She was amazing the whole time and now she has a clean bill of health and is loving her forever home. I have had an amazing experience at every level with the people and dogs at DDRT and could be happier that I am able to do my little part in helping these great little furbabies. I went in not knowing anybody and have come out with some great friends and have added an amazing little dachshund to my pack." Thank You, Jamie Madsen

"Our family started fostering in October of 2017. I love dogs and wanted to help in some way. I had no idea quite what we were getting into!
Since that time we have had 17 dogs steal our hearts. Each one has had a unique personality and story. Our first few dogs were each with us for short stays. They were able to quickly find there furever homes. The length of their stay may have been short, but they will not be forgotten.
While it can be difficult to say goodbye to the dogs, it is such a joy to see them with their forever families on "gotcha day". We get almost excited about the pups going home as their new families!
One of the most rewarding benefits of fostering has been watching my daughter connect with and love the dogs. She has spent countless hours sitting and petting some of the cautious pups, playing with the energetic young ones, and helping feed, brush and care for each dog. I can see the compassion she has for the dogs carry over to other areas of her life.
As a military family we try to jump into the place the community where we are stationed. Often we leave that place with amazing memories. I think our journey of fostering will not be left behind. We will continue to foster wherever we might be in the future and I think my daughter has started a lifelong love!" Sonja Genke

Mission

Denver Dachshunds Rescue and Transport is a 501C3 Non Profit Organization that is dedicated to helping Dachshunds and other small breeds Nationwide.

Background Statement

Fourteen years ago a friend called asking if I could help with a dog her neighbor had and no longer wanted. I agreed to take in the dog. When I pulled up she came out with something wrapped in a towel handed it to me, mumbled something and went back in her house. The towel held a tiny dachshund so scared she was biting anything in reach. She was covered in her own excrement and smelled of urine. A trip to an emergency Vet revealed she had had cigarette burns on her nose, her tail was broken in two places and she had three broken ribs. I called the lady thinking this little girl had to have been hit by a car. I was told her sons never liked the dog and sometimes teased it.

This is when the fire began. The drive to try to help stop so many enduring needless pain and suffering. For years I helped where I could but it was never enough to make a difference. Too many die in shelters and ditches unwanted, alone and afraid.

In April of 2013 we formed Denver Dachshunds Rescue and Transport in hopes of helping more dachshunds in need. In the time since we have helped nearly 2000 dogs into loving arms and families of their own.
