Background Statement
Vision:
To create an inclusive world where individuals with disabilities have equal access to adventure, personal growth, and community engagement through the transformative experience of scuba diving.
Core to our Mission is providing people living with disabilities opportunities to experience the freedom, peace, and joy that scuba diving offers, working to empower them to reclaim their sense of independence and adventure, while promoting physical and mental well-being.
What is Adaptive Scuba Diving?
Adaptive scuba diving is the modification of traditional scuba diving practices and equipment to accommodate the needs of people with physical disabilities. The goal is to make diving accessible, safe and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of mobility challenges. Thanks to advancements in diving equipment and training, people living with disabilities are now able to explore the depths of oceans, all while gaining independence, improving physical well-being, and experiencing personal growth.
Why Is Adaptive Scuba Diving Important?
For individuals living with disabilities, scuba diving can provide numerous physical, mental, and emotional benefits:
1. Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation: The buoyancy of water can relieve pressure on joints and muscles, making it easier to move and exercise. Scuba diving also promotes strength, flexibility, and coordination, all of which contribute to improved health and mobility.
2. Mental Health Benefits: Scuba diving fosters a sense of freedom and empowerment that can be life changing. Being able to dive into the underwater world opens up new possibilities, boosting self-esteem and confidence while offering a sense of calm and tranquility.
3. Social Inclusion: Adaptive scuba diving fosters a sense of community and camaraderie among divers, encouraging participants to engage in shared experiences. It also opens doors to new friendships and connections with others who understand the challenges and joys of adaptive sports.
4. Pushing Personal Boundaries: Scuba diving can be a transformative experience, allowing people to connect with the underwater world in a way that is both relaxing and invigorating, enabling individuals to face their fears, build resilience, and celebrate their ability to overcome challenges. It’s a thrilling, goal-oriented activity that promotes a sense of achievement and accomplishment.
5. Building Confidence and Independence: Diving requires focus, skill, and teamwork, which helps participants regain confidence in their abilities and fosters a sense of trust. For many, adaptive scuba diving becomes a metaphor for overcoming obstacles and embracing new challenges. Participants in our programs often report a renewed sense of independence and empowerment.
What We Do for People living with disabilities
We provide adaptive scuba diving and underwater exploration opportunities, ensuring participants have the support, equipment, and training they need to dive safely and confidently. Here’s how we make it happen:
1. Customized Dive Programs
We offer tailored scuba programs designed to accommodate the unique needs of people with disabilities. With an understanding of each individuals’ mobility challenges, our certified instructors adapt diving techniques and equipment to ensure every participant has a safe and enjoyable experience.
2. 1:1 Expert Instruction and Support
Our team consists of highly trained and experienced instructors who specialize in adaptive scuba diving. These professionals work closely with each participant to provide personalized instruction to ensure they feel safe and comfortable underwater. They focus on teaching the necessary skills, gaining an understanding of which skills the participant can complete, and which skills need to be supplemented, ensuring that every participant has a personalized plan that suits their abilities.
3. Custom Dive Equipment
Modified gear, such as wetsuits, buoyancy compensators and adaptive harnesses, are tailored to accommodate participants. The dive resorts that we work with must offer accessible boats, ramps, and other tools to ensure a seamless diving experience.
4. Certification along with a Buddy
Participants are encouraged to be trained along with a family member or friend who becomes a certified adaptive dive buddy. This buddy system not only promotes safety and a reassuring presence throughout the diving experience, but it also sets the stage for a lifetime of shared scuba recreational experiences and underwater exploration.
5. Healing Through the Ocean
Scuba diving provides numerous therapeutic benefits. The calming, weightless environment of the ocean can help alleviate physical pain, reduce anxiety, and promote emotional healing. Many find that the underwater experience offers a sense of tranquility and relief from the daily challenges of living. While our program begins in the pool and classroom, that’s only the start, as we take participants to the ocean for their diving certification to experience the magic of the marine environment.
6. Strong Community and Support Network
Through our adaptive scuba diving programs, participants are introduced to a community of like-minded individuals who share similar experiences and challenges. The camaraderie built within this community fosters long-lasting friendships and support networks, helping participants feel connected and supported. Some of our trips include up to 80+ participants, buddies, instructors, caregivers, family members and other divers.
