"Judo is a way of life; a way of being. It is a pleasure to carry on the tradition and spirit of judo." ~Sensei Earl Fukuhara

At DBT Judo Dojo, judo is a fast-paced martial art deeply rooted in tradition.

Your contribution will help our students not only learn the physical aspects of judo, but also the judo principles of respect, humility, self-discipline and giri - the Japanese spirit of giving back.

As an all-volunteer organization, we ask you to join us in supporting our students in their learning of judo. Your generous donation will make their practice and self-development possible by covering fundamental costs such as operating expenses, dojo facility rental at the Tri-State Denver Buddhist Temple, waived monthly dues for students in financial need, an annual scholarship program, and student support for expenses related to out-of-state tournaments.

Maintaining the same principles since its founding in Japan in 1886, our students are trained in the techniques of judo through physical practice and tournaments and the values of sportsmanship and ethical standards.

Our dojo fosters a community of learners guided by their sensei, who also learn from and teach one another on the mat. We are dedicated to creating a community of judoka—students that not only practice judo as a martial art, but as a way of life.

DBT Judo Dojo has been promoting physical wellness, character development, and Jita Kyoei (mutual benefit and welfare) through the practice of judo for more than seventy years. That spirit of Jita Kyoei has been the driving force of the dojo, which has taught countless students of diverse backgrounds since 1953.

Our family of sensei serve as the backbone of our dojo, volunteering their time to teach judo as a demonstration of their dedication to their students, as well as their community. Parents also play a key role in supporting their students, the dojo, and culture of Jita Kyoei; volunteering at dojo tournaments and community-related events throughout the year.

Thank you for considering to make a donation today! Your support will make it possible for our students to become skilled in judo, to build confidence, and to practice Jita Kyoei by giving back to the community, while carrying on the traditions of our dojo.

We appreciate your support and welcome you to be part of our dojo family.

Mission

To contribute to society by developing moral character, selfless giving, and mutual benefit and welfare through the art and tradition of Kodokan Judo.

Background Statement

The DBT Judo Dojo began teaching judo in Denver, Colorado in 1953 as the Denver Judo Dojo. The group was predominately made up of Japanese Americans, but was open to everyone regardless of race, creed, color or religion. By 1963, the organization had grown, and many students of non-Japanese heritage were learning judo. A new dojo was dedicated at that time. The organization was renamed the Denver School of Judo. Today, the dojo practices at the Tri-State Denver Buddhist Temple as the DBT Judo Dojo.

Judo or the “The Gentle Way” is a martial art developed in the late 1800s by Professor Jigoro Kano and has its roots in Jujutsu—the ancient art of the Samurai. Judo emphasizes the use of leverage rather than the use of strength to overcome an attack. It is a grappling discipline emphasizing the use of throws, pins, strangulation and joint locks. Since the 1960s, judo has been recognized as a competitive sport in the Olympics and is practiced worldwide.
