The south-central mountain region of Colorado is a unique place. Our combination of towering mountains, massive forests, abundant open land, significant water resources, plentiful sunshine, and dark nights makes this area a haven for people, wildlife, and plants.
Salida, centrally located and one of the largest communities in this region, has the opportunity – and an obligation – to preserve and enhance this natural environment, including the dark nights. Dark Sky Salida, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, was formed in 2025 to do exactly that.
Mission
Preserve and Enhance the Natural Nighttime Environment while Protecting Our Community and Wildlife from Light Pollution.
Background Statement
We aim to preserve the nighttime environment by educating the populace, instilling a culture of respecting the night. People and organizations that take concrete steps to preserve and enhance the night will be lauded as champions of the natural environment our community treasures. Preservation will be supported by guidance such as building codes and lighting standards for residences, commercial operations, and the city itself.
To enhance the nighttime environment, despite rising population, increasing visitor counts, and property development, will require a “lights out” culture, selection of appropriate, dark-sky-compliant lighting for new installations, and retrofit of some existing lighting. We expect our educational efforts to drive this, with retrofitting supported by financial assistance as resources permit.
