Testimonials

“What I have liked about this program is my motivation, my self-motivation, my confidence. I just, it was like I couldn't just stand in front of people, like speak up. I was just a shy girl, but just because of Binti Shupavu, I become more courageous.”  - Grace, Grade 9, Zambia

"When I have a problem, I now seek help from my sisters and my mentors. I listen to my parents, and I know my responsibility is to stay in school and do well." - Winess, Year 2 Binti Scholar, Mbari Secondary School in Zimbabwe

"Binti Shupavu has changed my life. It has given me ideas and encouragement to take steps toward standing on my own, speaking up for myself and other girls, and building the courage to share and uplift others." - Nataizya, Grade 10, Zambia

"Discipline in the girls has increased, especially among Form 2 girls. Their attitude has changed positively. Also, they have improved academically in Biology and Agriculture, which I teach." - Schorastica, Teacher at Mirichu Secondary School in Kenya

"I can only do enough as a parent in terms of impacting wisdom in a child, but the program does more." - Lillian, Parent, Zambia

Mission

Daring Girls partners locally in four African countries to ensure that girls have the knowledge, tools, mentorship and support to confidently design their own futures.

In partnership with our Tanzania-based sister organization, GLAMI (Girls Livelihood and Mentorship Initiative), we equip girls to overcome challenges and reach their full potential because educated girls create lasting positive change. The outcome is resilient, proactive, and socially-responsible girls who secure better jobs, raise healthier children, and increase the standing of women in society.

Daring Girls supports the implementation of two core extracurricular mentoring programs:

Kisa Project is a two-year leadership course that prepares girls in their last two years of secondary school to attend university and create positive social change in their communities.

Binti Shupavu is a four-year life skills course for lower secondary school girls covering topics such as study skills, personal leadership, health, and self-confidence with the goal of increasing graduation rates for vulnerable girls.

In 2022, GLAMI received the UNESCO Prize for Girls' and Women's Education, recognizing the critical role of Kisa Project and Binti Shupavu in helping girls complete their education.

In 2023, Daring Girls and GLAMI launched a pilot of the Binti Shupavu program in Kenya through the locally led nonprofit, CWE-TECH (Centre for Women Empowerment in Technology), marking the first time our curriculum would be localized and used with girls in a new context, in a new location. In 2024, Daring Girls added new Binti Shupavu pilot partners in Zambia through EIRWA (Empowerment Initiative for Rural Women and Adolescents) and in Zimbabwe through RNCYPT (Regional Network of Children and Young People Trust). In 2025, Daring Girls released our first Binti Shupavu International Pilot Learning Report, capturing lessons learned from expanding the program in new cultures and contexts: https://daringgirls.org/2025-learning-report/

Background Statement

Daring Girls (formerly AfricAid) is rooted in the experiences of our founder, Ashley Shuyler, who traveled to Tanzania for the first time with her family in 1996 at the age of eleven. Struck by the poverty she saw while there, particularly among children her own age, she became determined to do something to help. She soon learned that, in contrast to her own educational experiences in the United States, only a small fraction of girls in Tanzania are able to obtain an education beyond the primary school level. Because of her strong belief that education is the most crucial component of any long-term solution to the many challenges facing East Africa, particularly in the areas of health and inequality, she formed Daring Girls as AfricAid at the age of sixteen.

Since its inception in 2001, Daring Girls has raised several million dollars to help transform the educational landscape for girls in Tanzania. In 2022, the mentoring programs developed over the years with our Tanzanian sister organization, GLAMI (formerly AfricAid Tanzania), were recognized with the prestigious UNESCO Prize for Girls' and Women's Education. In 2023, Daring Girls and GLAMI partnered with CWE-TECH (Centre for Women Empowerment in Technology) to pilot our Binti Shupavu curriculum, working together to localize the program for girls in Murang'a County, Kenya. In 2024, Daring Girls added new Binti Shupavu pilot partners in Zambia through EIRWA (Empowerment Initiative for Rural Women and Adolescents) and in Zimbabwe through RNCYPT (Regional Network of Children and Young People Trust).
