Mission

The mission of the University of Denver is to promote learning by engaging with students in advancing scholarly inquiry, cultivating critical and creative thought, and generating knowledge. Our active partnerships with local and global communities contribute to a sustainable common good.

Background Statement

Founded by Colorado Territorial Governor John Evans in 1864 as Colorado Seminary, the University of Denver was created to educate the mining camp city of Denver. The school and the city grew together in knowledge and sophistication, opening the Rocky Mountain West to innovative thinking, business, and entrepreneurship. Now the oldest independent university in the Rocky Mountain region, DU is committed to its vision as a great private university dedicated to the public good; its impact has grown far beyond the borders of Denver.

The University of Denver focuses research and scholarship on improving the lives of individuals and communities around the world. The University is known nationally and internationally for preparing students to blaze trails in government, business, education, health care, sports, law, and the arts - wherever there is a need for principled leadership, critical assessment, and creative thinking.
