The Colorado State Science Fair is looking for support for the 67th annual Colorado Science & Engineering Fair to be held April 13 - 15, 2023. The purpose of the CSEF is to stimulate student interest and encourage them in science and engineering through recognition of their research project.

Participating in the Colorado Science & Engineering Fairs has been one of the most formative experiences in my life, and has greatly impacted my future. Coming from rural northeastern Colorado, having the incentive to conduct research, be recognized for it and meet fellow student researchers in the process was an opportunity I valued greatly. In my seven years competing, and having participated in the Northeast Colorado Regional, Colorado and International Science & Engineering Fairs, my time in the science fair has been invaluable to my development and my life experience. For one, I have had an amazing series of opportunities at the CSEF to connect and bond with fellow student researchers from around Colorado - something I would otherwise not have had the opportunity to do, and which I have treasured. Another important impact the fair has had on me has been as an outlet to express my interests in research, a way to improve my skills in experimental design and data analysis and an opportunity to gain scholarships to fund my education in the process. Finally, my participation in the CSEF has allowed me to make invaluable contacts and connections among the CSU faculty, which I will come to value greatly during my time in attendance at that university and beyond. All in all, I have only great admiration and respect for this program and the people who administrate and facilitate it.
Casey Shaw (CSEF Alumni 20110-2018)

Background Statement

The Colorado State Science Fair, Inc. was established in 1977 as a private, non-profit organization to run the Colorado Science and Engineering Fair (CSEF). The CSEF has actually been held annually since 1955 and is the state-level event in a year-long process of local and regional science fairs. More than three thousand students participate in science fair programs state-wide. The purpose of the CSEF is to stimulate student interest and encourage students in science and engineering through recognition of their research knowledge, ability and achievement.

Each year, a number of experiences are made available to the student finalists who participate in the CSEF. Tours of university and local corporate research facilities provide opportunities for students and their families to see research in action. Additionally, the judges' interviews allow the finalists a chance to interact with professional scientists and engineers. Over the years, many students have said that having the chance to meet and speak with their peers about their science projects is the most beneficial aspect of the Colorado Science and Engineering Fair.

In addition to getting the opportunity to interact with working scientists, CSEF finalists compete for awards in the categories of Animal Sciences; Behavioral & Social Sciences; Biomedical & Health Sciences; Chemistry; Earth & Environmental Sciences; Energy; Engineering; Environmental Engineering; Mathematics & Computer Sciences; Micro & Molecular Biology; Physics & Astronomy; and Plant Sciences - either as an individual or as a team project. Recognition for outstanding research in each of these categories as well as an award for technical writing are presented each year at the CSEF Awards Ceremony. The top Senior Division projects are awarded the honor to compete at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) each year.
