Meet Leo. A Life Changed Because Someone Showed Up.
Leo Markworth, a retired Marine, will tell you he wasn’t smiling much a few months before this photo was taken. He was isolated, struggling, and dangerously close to becoming part of the tragic statistic of 22 veteran suicides every day. His crisis ultimately led him to the hospital.
Then—everything shifted.
A few local PGA of America Golf Professionals reached out and invited him to PGA HOPE. That simple act of inclusion—showing up, swinging a club, finding a team again—became Leo’s turning point. He had never truly played golf before, yet today he practices or plays almost every day at Colorado National GC.
Through golf, he found connection, purpose, and something invaluable: hope.
Leo recently shared a message we will never forget:
“I can’t thank you enough for giving me a second chance at life… You guys made it 21 suicides instead of 22.”

To Positively Impact Lives In Our Community Through The Game of Golf
Background Statement
Since its inception in 1996, the PGA REACH Colorado Foundation has worked daily to support our over 900 Colorado PGA of America Golf Professionals to make a difference in our local communities through the lens of the game of golf. Programming tries to ensure that regardless of your age or background, cost will never inhibit one’s involvement and enjoyment of the game of golf. The mission of the PGA REACH Colorado Foundation is to positively impact the lives of youth, military, and underserved populations by enabling access to PGA of America Golf Professionals, the Colorado PGA Section, and the game of golf.
We accomplish this mission through programming across our three pillars of work.
At the heart of these three pillars are five guiding principles:
1. Golf is a game for all and should be seen that way.
2. Introduction to the game at a young age can improve and advance opportunities for youth.
3. Golf is an excellent rehabilitation tool for military veterans and active personnel.
4. Make golf inclusive of people from all cultural and ethnic backgrounds and for individuals with disabilities.
5. Golf promotes family values, health, wellness, and fitness and leads to productive citizenship.
