Colorado Historical Foundation

A nonprofit organization

Join us in documenting, interpreting, commemorating and protecting Colorado's historic resources. Your support helps sustain financial, legal and technical resources used to archive, protect, care for and interpret our state's storied history and special places for generations to come.

"I've personally benefited from Colorado Historical Foundation's low-interest loan program in the rehabilitation of an 1884 train freight depot in Leadville, Colorado. The project employed dozens of local craftspeople, re-imagined a very tired structure and now hosts community gatherings from film festivals, to Quinceanera celebrations, to 'State of the Community' meetings, to family leadership training institutes, to Zumba, and beyond. FREIGHT is a source of pride for Leadville and it exists, in part, thanks to the Colorado Historical Foundation." - Nan Anderson, co-owner of FREIGHT

The mission of the Colorado Historical Foundation is to advance the study and preservation of Colorado history and historic properties by providing other history-related organizations with financial services (including holding, investing and managing custodial accounts and endowments), and by selectively initiating its own history and preservation programs, including accepting and managing preservation easements.

Background Statement

Established in 1965, The Colorado Historical Foundation (CHF) was conceived to bolster other Colorado entities' efforts to celebrate, preserve, document and commemorate our state's rich history. The spirit of statewide collaboration and support infuses our core programs today: Preservation Loans, Fund Stewardship, Project Support Services and Conservation Easements on historic properties.

Through our work, artifacts, buildings and sites associated with Colorado's cultural heritage are protected and restored to connect future generations with our past. Our programs and the funds we steward make it possible for Coloradans and visitors alike to access and explore our state's diverse history through educational programs, experiences, stories and objects. We partner with private parties, public agencies, nonprofit organizations and informal coalitions to bring history to life.
