A nonprofit organization

The Colorado Scientific Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to sharing knowledge of the physical sciences and promoting social and intellectual bonds within a broad community of professional earth scientists and interested individuals.  More detailed information about the Society can be found at our website at https://coloscisoc.org. To better serve our mission, the Society solicits donations from members and interested parties that help support two broad areas.

1) Contributions to our Endowment Fund are used to support the Society’s monthly meetings with presentations of earth science research, newsletter, field trips, Past Presidents dinner, annual Emmons Lecture, and special activities.  Our meetings are free and open to the public. Please join us.

2) Contributions to our Memorial Funds are used to financially support undergraduate and graduate student research investigating earth science projects in the Rocky Mountain west (https://coloscisoc.org/grants/ )

The Colorado Scientific Society is dedicated to promoting knowledge and the understanding of science, including its application to human needs. Since its founding in 1882, the Society has primarily focused on earth and physical science, but we welcome members with interests in all fields of science

Background Statement

The Colorado Scientific Society (CSS) is the oldest scientific society in the Rocky Mountain Region, founded in 1882. Throughout its more than 140-year history, our goal has been to promote and disseminate knowledge of scientific topics to an active community of earth- and planetary-science enthusiasts.

Our meetings are free and open to the public. They provide high-quality, in-person and remote lectures on issues of current research including geological, paleontological, archaeological, and astronomical issues topics. Our long history also lets us provide historical perspectives related to the evolution of understanding the physical nature of our Rocky Mountain West. We host part-day, single-day, and multi-day field trips excursions to local and regional sites lead by experts who enjoy sharing their knowledge of with our members and the public. See https://coloscisoc.org for upcoming field trips and sign up.

The Society also operates an annual student grant program to help fund research projects that contribute to understanding a wide range of topics (more than $160,000 awarded to some 200 students since program inception). ). Our annual Poster Night gives early career and student earth scientists an opportunity to present their research.
