Colorado Outdoor Education Center

A nonprofit organization

The Colorado Outdoor Education Center is a non-profit educational institution located in the Rocky Mountains 35 miles west of Colorado Springs, CO. Our program offerings help children and adults define themselves within the turmoil of a busy world. They help our children become the adults we desperately hope they will be; and they help adults reclaim or rediscover their best selves. Colorado Outdoor Education Center remains committed to developing our future generations by utilizing the most progressive, up-to-date research available, while continuing to recognize and teach the core values that have been creating happy, successful, and wise adults and children for the past sixty years.

Mission

The mission of Colorado Outdoor Education Center (COEC) is to develop the potential of individuals by providing extraordinary educational experiences in the natural world.

Background Statement

In the late 1940’s an idealistic young couple had a vision of a better world. In the years just after World War II, Laura and Sandy Sanborn had a dream of creating a place where young people could learn to live together in the out-of-doors. They bought 480 acres of land in the Rocky Mountains of central Colorado and, in 1948, they welcomed four boys to Big Spring Ranch. Now, almost 70 years later, the Colorado Outdoor Education Center - comprised of Sanborn Western Camps, High Trails Outdoor Education Center, and The Nature Place Conference Center - provides outdoor experiences for thousands of children and adults each year.
