The Colorado Council of Genealogical Societies (CCGS) was established in 1980 as a non-profit organization to facilitate cooperation among heritage-related organizations. In 1998, the Council proudly served as the host for the National Genealogical Society's Conference in the United States. We are a 501(c)(3) IRS registered organization and have charity status with the State of Colorado.

We hold quarterly meetings with our 28 member societies in January, April, July, and October. Besides our standard business meeting, we offer management sessions for our member societies and events by our members.

The Council offers our Colorado First Families Recognition Program certificates for families who meet our Colorado requirements. The First Families of Colorado Recognition Program was started by the Council in 1983. There are three categories of certificates: First Family, Territorial and Centennial. The certificates are numbered and show the ancestor's name and the name of the applicant. We have provided over 1,500 certificates since the program was created in 1983.

We also offer our Society Management Workshop every other year with a keynote speaker on the future of societies. In addition, we include multiple classes on society management type of classes for our member societies on improving or adding new skills to their society!

Council members can watch our quarterly webinars with many instruction type of videos for our member societies on our quarterly webinars on either management type of subjects or on different apps on improving their society!

As a Council member, they can apply for two major awards for their members who are either living or deceased. The annual Vogels award provide our member societies with volunteers who have been deceased for two or more years. The David S. Vogels, Jr. Award was established in 1990 at the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) and at the Colorado Council (CCGS) to honor the accomplishments of noted deceased volunteers. The Birdie Monk Holsclaw Volunteer of the Year Award is given to an outstanding living individual, society, group, library, archive, or other organization that has provided outstanding volunteer service to the Colorado Council of Genealogical Societies or some area of genealogical service in Colorado.
