Climate Democracy Initiative

The Climate Democracy Initiative works at the intersection of climate and democracy to put power in the hands of communities. We build people-centered systems with small and rural communities as they step forward, have a real say in decisions that affect them, and define the resources they need to shape their community’s future. Across our work, we’re ensuring communities create their own vision for development, preparing local leaders before climate disasters strike, and creating meaningful leadership opportunities for young people through environmental civics education.

"Communities across Colorado and the country are making big choices right now about energy, land, water, and how to prepare for more extreme weather," said Natalie Montecino, Executive Director.  "What keeps me going in this work is seeing what happens when the people who live with those choices have a real say in making them. At CDI, we work alongside young people, local leaders, and partners to make that possible, and we share what we learn so other communities can build on it."

Mission

CDI builds people-centered systems that support public trust and local leadership in communities as they navigate environmental change and shape the decisions affecting their shared futures.

Background Statement

A changing climate is putting pressure on the institutions and civic processes that communities depend on; people lose trust in those systems when meaningful participation in decision making is absent.

CDI connects environmental resilience and democratic practice so community members, local leaders, educators, students, practitioners, and partner organizations strengthen their ability to make decisions together.
