City Year Denver

A nonprofit organization

We know more than we ever have about how young people learn and develop. Yet too many students do not have access to the learning environments they need  to thrive, due to systemic failings that have contributed to inequitable access to educational opportunities. These inequities disproportionately impact students of color and students growing up in low-income households.

Our AmeriCorps members serve in schools as student success coaches who help students cultivate foundational social, emotional and academic skills. They not only make a difference in the lives of students, but also acquire valuable skills and experience that prepare them to lead and make meaningful contributions where they live and work.

Our reach in Denver

  • 6 school partners
  • 50 AmeriCorps Members
  • 2,333 students served
  • 84,500 hours of service annually

Mission

City Year’s dual mission is to advance academic outcomes for all students and develop the next generation of leaders through national service.

Background Statement

At City Year we believe that supporting children and young adults and helping them to reach their full potential contributes to vibrant communities, outcomes that benefit all of us.

At the core of City Year’s work are young leaders who dedicate a year or more of their lives to serve as AmeriCorps members, advancing student academic outcomes while also expanding their own skills and opportunities for future study and/or career.

Serving with City Year is challenging, but can be transformative. During their year of service, AmeriCorps members are given a high degree of responsibility, along with leadership opportunities that have impact on them personally and on the students with whom they work.

The City Year experience provides AmeriCorps members with pathways to career and resources for additional education and other benefits. As they serve in schools, AmeriCorps members receive ongoing professional development and resources for career and continuing education, including access to exclusive scholarships and programs with extensive rosters of university partners and career partners.
