The root of homelessness is ruptured relationships.

Christ in the City brings a unique approach to homeless ministry by addressing the most debilitating need for the homeless in the streets, the underlying need for human connection.

Missionaries walk the city over and over, simply listening, loving, and being present to those they meet. They approach with the love of Christ, seeing each individual as a person to be loved, not a problem to be fixed. Healing for our homeless friends–and our society at large–doesn’t happen without relationship. In time, trust is built. The power of friendship begins to slowly soften hearts and break down walls. It begins to open doors that may have been closed for a long time.

Remembering someone's name and continuing to show up for them becomes the catalyst for our homeless friends to take advantage of housing, sobriety programs, and job opportunities; to overcome the depression and loneliness that is often so paralyzing. As our friends recognize that they are worthy of being loved and capable of maintaining relationships, they often begin to reconnect with loved ones, and start a journey of healing that changes the course of their lives.

The cycle of poverty can be broken by the simple strength of human connection.

Mission

Where Formation Meets Service:

The future of our Church, and indeed our world, depends on a generation willing to step out of their comfort zones, deepen their relationship with Christ, and pour out His love to a world hungry for hope and encounter. This is where authentic faith meets radical action.

Background Statement

Particularly in the secular world, there is a need for well-formed disciples who are not afraid to share their faith, yet know how to love and interact with others, regardless of their differences. Missionaries have a unique opportunity to transform the way people view and interact with the homeless; converting hearts from harmful or judgmental preconceptions about those experiencing homelessness towards mercy, empathy, and authentic love. Christ in the City promotes the dignity, the sanctity of the human person, beginning with the homeless.

Missionaries not only give testimony to the dignity of those experiencing homelessness, but each person they encounter: volunteers, college students, visitors to CITC, donors, and more. As each of these people are treated in such a way, they go on to transform culture in their own families and communities. Transforming culture, along with evangelization and homeless outreach, is an integral piece of our mission.

Missionaries are commissioned to go forth from Christ in the City to bring the love of Christ with them wherever they go.
