Colorado Gynecologic Cancer Alliance(formerlyCOCA)

A nonprofit organization

The mission of the Colorado Gynecologic Cancer Alliance (formerly Colorado Ovarian Cancer Alliance or COCA), is to promote awareness and early detection of gynecologic cancers through advocacy and education while providing support to people in Colorado affected by gynecologic cancer.

We work to:

  • increase awareness of symptoms and risk factors of gynecologic cancer in the general population in Colorado;

  • create and promote statewide resources that provide support, encourage networking, and provide information to people diagnosed with gynecologic cancer;

  • unite and educate individuals, the medical community, and organizations to overcome gynecologic cancer throughout Colorado;

  • advance gynecologic cancer research toward better treatment, diagnosis and an eventual cure for the disease.

CGCA was established in June 2005 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation (originally named Colorado Ovarian Cancer Alliance).

Our Board of Directors includes community leaders as well as gynecologic cancer survivors, friends, and family of survivors or who have lost their battles with this disease.

Background Statement

CGCA'S HISTORY:

The Colorado Gynecologic Cancer Alliance was created in 2005 when an ovarian cancer support group comprised of several survivors and their group facilitator, Susan Hess, formed the organization in order to fully address the disease in Colorado.

A memorial donation from the family of Nicki Stoner provided the initial funds for the emotional support group, now named "Nicki's Circle".

In 2008 and 2009, the organization grew slowly but steadily, and plans were laid to host an Ovarian Cancer Race for Awareness to be held in Denver's City Park on June 5th, 2010. This event was led and organized by Jodi Brammeier while she was in treatment for ovarian cancer. Jodi's Race for Awareness exceeded all expectations with over 1,500 runners and over $150,000 donated -- these funds allowed for the next chapter of growth for the organization.

Through the years, individual donations have been the driving force behind CGCA's growth. And events such as Jodi's Race for Awareness, Pedal with Polumbus to BEAT ovarian cancer, CGCA's Teal Gala, and the Ty Teigen Memorial Barrel Race have enabled CGCA to expand its programs for survivors in Colorado.

As of 2024, there are multiple monthly online emotional support groups, a weekly group, one bi-monthly group, an ongoing educational series, and individual counseling. CGCA also provides financial assistance to survivors and their families through a direct assistance program (CGCA Cares) and financial and insurance navigation through our Carol's Wish program that saved women over $2.5Million in 2023 alone.
