The Center for Independence offers 5 core services to empower people with disabilities to live independently: Personal & Systems Advocacy, Information & Referral, Peer Mentoring, Independent Living Skills and Community Transition. Plus, we offer Social Security Disability Benefits & Housing Application assistance, help with resolving landlord/tenant issues, ASL interpreting/CART/VRI, Peer Support Groups for Youth & Low Vision, Classes/Education, Assistive Technology training, ADA advocacy, and Low Vision/Blind and Deaf/Hard of Hearing services. We also just launched a transportation division to assist people with mobility issues get to medical appointments.

The Center for Independence (CFI) promotes community solutions and empowers individuals with disabilities to live independently.

Background Statement

The Center for Independence (CFI) began in 1982 as the Helen Campbell Center for the Blind. Founded by five newly blind women that recognized the need for skills in survival, and independent living for people with visual impairments. In 1986, services were expanded to encompass and acknowledge the needs of people with all types of disabilities. CFI now serves 12 counties on Colorado's Western Slope, with offices in Grand Junction, Glenwood Springs, Salida and Montrose.
