Background Statement
CARE Communities was founded in 1992 by community organizer Sister Mary Alice Murphy and a group of dedicated community members who came together from the private, public, and faith-based sectors. United by a shared commitment to address the shortage of quality, affordable housing in Fort Collins, these leaders invested their time, expertise, and resources to establish what is now CARE Communities.
Today, CARE has developed and operates eight affordable housing communities with 440 apartments, providing stable homes to 1,000 residents with low incomes—including 500 youth, 60 older adults, and 300 single-parent households. The average household includes 2.5 family members, and the average income of a CARE household is $35,000.
From its inception, CARE’s vision—shaped by Sister Mary Alice and the founding Board of Directors—was to offer far more than housing. They sought to create supportive, thriving environments where individuals and families could build stability, opportunity, and community.
To fulfill that vision, CARE’s Resident Services Program provides essential support that helps residents overcome barriers and remain housed. Key components include:
• The Housing Success Program (established in 2018), a voluntary long-term payment plan program paired with individualized action planning, budgeting support, and resource referrals with CARE’s social work team.
• The Sister Mary Alice Murphy Legacy Fund, which provides short-term rent assistance to residents experiencing financial hardship.
• Youth programs, community-building events, and partnerships that connect residents to opportunities for education, employment, financial stability, and other critical resources.
• In 2023, CARE Communities launched our Resident Council, a resident-driven group committed to helping improve the quality of life in their communities. Residents have a voice in CARE resident programs, community events, how CARE spends program dollars at each property, and strategies to promote thriving communities.
Together, these efforts ensure that CARE Communities is not just a property mananger—it is a partner in stability, growth, and long-term well-being for the residents who call CARE home.
