Carbondale Bike Project refurbishes donated, abandoned and landfill bound bikes and returns useable bikes to the regional and global community at low or no cost.  We re-home hundreds of bikes each year within our local communities and through partnering with other non-profits - local, reginal and international, providing a new mode of transportation to those in need.

* 600 plus community members served, including youth workshops & internships

* 300 plus bicycles a year are kept out of the landfill

* 425 bikes donated to CBP so far this year

* 491 bikes donated to CBP in 2025

* 400 plus hundred bikes donated to youth, community, regional and international non-profits

At our shop we offer work stands and tools for those wishing to repair/maintain their bicycle, education, assistance, and instruction on how to repair and maintain your bike, plenty of bicycle frames so that members of our community can build a complete bike from our donated inventory, an extensive supply of used parts, and a new home for a bike or parts you no longer want.

Background Statement

Founded in 2009 by Aaron Taylor, CBP has been in operation since 2009. Originally known as Bonedale Bicycle Project, Aaron operated from a dirt parking lot in the center of Carbondale. The original focus of the Project was to refurbish landfill bound bikes and return useable bikes to the community at low or no cost. Aaron’ s vision included helping those who wanted to work on their own bikes and learn bicycle mechanics. This philosophy remains today and has expanded to include community education and outreach.

In January 2017 the Project became a non-profit and was named The Way of Compassion Bicycle Project. In February 2018 the Project moved to its current space in the Third Street Center in Carbondale. When Aaron moved from the area in 2021, the Third Street Center offered fiscal sponsorship. The Project was renamed the Carbondale Bike Project and in 2026 obtained its own non-profit status.

Dedicated volunteers continue to operate the shop, help with many bike centered events, coordinate bike salvage programs, hold workshops and offer youth programs.
