Our Difference
A Public School Where Every Student Is Known
Every family hopes their child will be known by their teachers, challenged to grow, and ready for whatever comes next. For 20 years, Caprock Academy has made that hope a daily reality for Grand Valley families, and we do it as a tuition-free public charter school open to students across Colorado.
Since opening in 2007, Caprock has built its education on three pillars: Character, Accountability, and Academics. Students read original texts rather than summaries, learn to reason and speak with clarity, and practice a new virtue each month. Our 750 students are taught by teachers who know them by name and hold them to high standards.
The results are visible. One hundred percent of our high school students graduate. Every senior researches, writes, and publicly defends a thesis on the question “What is the Good Life?” Niche ranks Caprock the #1 Best Public High School in Mesa County for 2027. This year, seniors can also earn transferable college credit through our concurrent enrollment partnership with Colorado Mesa University.

Our vision is to strengthen the community through the involvement of parents, educators and community leaders working together to provide an environment that fosters academic excellence and develops strong character in our students. We shape global citizens who set life goals and practice lives of service and virtue.

Caprock Academy, a tuition-free public K-12 charter school in Grand Junction, delivers on that hope through Character, Accountability, and Academics. One hundred percent of our high school students graduate, and Niche ranks Caprock the #1 Best Public High School in Mesa County for 2027.
Caprock was founded in 2006 by a group of dedicated parents who believed Grand Valley families deserved a choice: a public school that combined academic rigor with strong character development. We opened our doors in 2007 with a classical education, a time-tested approach focused on thinking skills and communication, designed to shape both minds and hearts.
What began in a two-story house with six modular classrooms, 19 staff members, and 280 students in Kindergarten through 7th grade has grown into a K-12 campus serving 750 students and employing over 100 faculty and staff. In 2020, we completed Phase II of our building project, adding 29 classrooms, an auxiliary gym, and locker rooms. Through every stage of growth, Caprock has stayed true to its founding mission while expanding opportunities for students to learn, serve, and lead.
Today, students read original texts, practice a new virtue each month, and graduate with the experience of researching, writing, and publicly defending a senior thesis. Seniors can also earn transferable college credit through our concurrent enrollment partnership with Colorado Mesa University.
Our work has been recognized by others. Niche ranks Caprock’s teachers #1 in Mesa County at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. U.S. News & World Report has named Caprock Academy High School one of the Best High Schools in Colorado six times, in 2017, 2020, 2021, 2023, 2024, and 2025-2026.
As we celebrate our 20th year, we are deeply grateful to the community whose partnership makes this possible. Together, we are helping every student become known, challenged, and prepared for what comes next, one student at a time.
