Together, We’re Shaping Tomorrow’s Leaders

Caprock Academy is more than a school — it’s a community dedicated to shaping the minds and hearts of tomorrow’s leaders. Founded right here in Mesa County, we are a tuition-free, K–12 public charter school offering a classical education that emphasizes Character, Accountability, and Academics.

We believe families deserve a meaningful choice in education — one that values integrity, wisdom, and responsibility as much as academic achievement. At Caprock Academy, these values are woven into every lesson, conversation, and act of service.

Our students learn that knowledge and virtue go hand in hand. They are challenged to think deeply, communicate clearly, and act honorably. Whether through literature that explores the human experience, logic that strengthens reasoning, or community service that builds compassion, every aspect of our curriculum cultivates the whole student.

Background Statement

Founded in 2006, Caprock Academy is a public, tuition-free K–12 charter school in Grand Junction dedicated to Character, Accountability, and Academics. Recognized among the top schools in Mesa County and named one of the Best High Schools in Colorado by U.S. News & World Report, Caprock continues to provide a classical education that shapes both minds and hearts.

Caprock Academy was founded by a group of dedicated parents who believed that families in the Grand Valley deserved a choice — a public school that combined academic excellence with strong character development in a safe, nurturing environment. Their vision was to create a place where education would inspire both the mind and the heart through the principles of classical learning.

What began in a two-story house with six modular classrooms, 19 staff members, and 280 students in Kindergarten through 7th grade has grown into a thriving K–12 campus serving more than 750 students and employing over 130 faculty and staff. Over the years, Caprock Academy has remained true to its founding mission while expanding opportunities for students to learn, serve, and lead.

In 2020, we completed Phase II of our building project, adding 29 classrooms, an auxiliary gym, and locker rooms to better serve our growing student body. Since then, our programs and community partnerships have continued to flourish, reflecting our belief that true education extends beyond academics to include service, responsibility, and personal growth.

Today, Caprock Academy is proud to continue its tradition of excellence, ranked by Niche as the #1 middle and high school and #2 elementary school in Mesa County for 2026, after three consecutive years of top rankings across all divisions.

In addition, Caprock Academy High School has been named among the 2025–2026 Best High Schools in Colorado, according to the prestigious rankings published by U.S. News & World Report. This marks the sixth year Caprock Academy has earned this distinction, with previous recognitions in 2017, 2020, 2021, 2023, and 2024.

As a public, tuition-free school of choice, Caprock Academy continues to uphold the values of Character, Accountability, and Academics, preparing students not only for college and career but for life. We are deeply grateful to our community, whose partnership allows us to shape tomorrow’s leaders — one student at a time.
