Background Statement
Colorado Alliance for Caregiving Youth (CACY) is an independent nonprofit that emerged from The Caregivers’ Guardian (TCG). While we share common roots, CACY operates separately with its own mission, vision, and governance.
OUR VISION:
We envision a Colorado where youth caregivers are visible, valued, and supported—recognized pillars of strength in their communities. With the knowledge, skills, and resources to make informed decisions, these students can pursue their education, protect their well-being, and advocate for themselves and their families.
WHY IT MATTERS:
In Colorado, 20.5% of middle schoolers and 12.4% of high schoolers identify as youth caregivers—with some districts reporting up to 31% (2023 Colorado Healthy Kids Survey). Nationally, 5.4 million youth care for family members (AARP / National Alliance for Caregiving, 2020).
In 2022, in partnership with the American Association of Caregiving Youth (AACY), CACY’s founder helped lead a statewide coalition to add caregiving questions to Colorado’s biennial Healthy Kids Survey—the first time the state measured caregiving among middle and high school students. The 2023 results established Colorado’s first statewide baseline, illuminating the true scope and needs.
