Burro Base Camp began in 2016 with one person’s passion for wild burros and a vision to create a safe, nurturing place for them to begin new lives. What started as a few corrals has grown into a sanctuary and training center for burros from the Bureau of Land Management’s Wild Horse and Burro Program and others in need of rescue.

Located in Kiowa, Colorado, since 2021, we welcome both wild and domestic burros, many arriving from auctions or uncertain situations. Each burro’s journey focuses on trust, care, and skill-building, helping them transition from “wild to mild” as they learn to accept touch, haltering, leading, and loading.

With the support of volunteers, donors, and partners, we provide quarantine, veterinary care, and individualized training until each burro is ready for a trusted forever home. In 2023, Burro Base Camp became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, expanding our reach and ability to serve burros across the country.

We’re proud to have supported more than 400 burros since our founding. Guided by compassion, transparency, and high standards of animal welfare, our mission is simple: to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome burros in need—one burro at a time.

Your support matters.

Every donation helps us provide safety, care, and second chances for burros in need. With your help, we can continue welcoming each new arrival with open gates, gentle hands, and the promise of a better life. Please consider supporting Burro Base Camp today, because every burro deserves the chance to thrive.

What’s the difference between a burro and a donkey? “Burro” is the Spanish word for “donkey.” Generally, burros are wild or formerly wild, while donkeys are domestically born.
