BECS has a unique history. The school was issued a 31-year charter in 2000 through District 27j, and, the 88,000 square foot facility was constructed in 2001 to serve a capacity of 810 students. Construction was financed with the issuance of $12.8 million in construction bonds through the Colorado Educational and Cultural Facilities Association (CECFA.) Notably, the $12.8 million issuance for a charter through a community non-profit group was the first of its type in Colorado, and was the largest to date in Colorado for a charter school. BECS was the first and only charter school in the nation to receive investment grade ratings from both Fitch and Moody.
